How to Connect Component Speakers (Guide with Photos)

Most cars don't have quality speakers or stereos. A good sound system should detect both high frequencies (good tweeters) and low frequencies (woofers). Do you want to change your musical experience in the car? If so, then you need to connect the component speakers to your car's audio system.

The process is not difficult, but care must be taken not to break the components of the speaker. I've done this kind of work a few times before for myself and many clients, and in today's article, I'll teach you how to do it yourself!

Quick Overview: It only takes a few steps to connect component speakers. Start by identifying all the components that are; woofer, subwoofer, crossover, tweeters, and sometimes super tweeters. Go ahead and mount the woofer in one of the following locations: on the dashboard, doors, or side panels. Check for small spots in the default positions and install the tweeter. It must be mounted close to the crossover (within 12 inches) to get a clear sound. Once you have installed both the tweeter and the woofer, install the car audio crossover. First, disconnect the negative battery terminal and find a place free of vibration moisture. And then install the crossover near the woofer, tighten it. Connect the battery and test your system!

How to install component speakers: getting to know the details

Knowing the parts of component speakers before installing them in a car is critical. A typical set of component speakers includes a crossover, woofer, subwoofer, tweeter, and some of them have super tweeters. Let's discuss each component:

woofer

Deep bass adds spice to the music, but it flows in the low frequency range from 10 Hz to 10000 Hz. The subwoofer can detect such low frequency sounds.

tweeter

Unlike woofers, tweeters are designed to capture high frequencies, up to 20,000 Hz. The tweeter not only delivers high range sound, but also enhances sound clarity and deepens high frequencies.

Crossover

Typically, crossovers convert a single input audio signal into multiple output signals. After all, the frequencies are divided according to certain components.

Super twitter

The super tweeters bring the music to life by enhancing the sound quality and hence a realistic version of the sound is achieved. This component produces ultrasonic frequencies (over 2000 Hz) that eliminate distortion in music.

Subwoofer

The purpose of the subwoofers is to clear the base and give out the subwoofer. The result is a well moderated bass that provides a deep bass environment. However, not all sets have subwoofers, such as super tweeters. But crossovers, woofers and tweeters are the main parts of a component speaker.

Installation procedure

Connecting component speakers does not require much experience. But it would be helpful if you were careful not to break fragile parts. Also make sure that the installation process does not compromise the functionality of your vehicle. Please seek professional help if you get lost, do not improvise as this may damage the vehicle.

Installing the subwoofer

The default positions for secure mounting of component speakers in vehicles include the following:

  • On kick panels
  • On the doors
  • Dashboard

In any case, you can proceed individually by drilling holes in the indicated places and connecting a subwoofer.

Always drill holes carefully so as not to damage the vehicle's electronics.

Establishment of Twitter

Since the tweeters are tiny, they can be installed in small spaces. Find a spot on your dash, hood, sail panels or car door where you can mount your tweeter, usually already there.

Always install the tweeters in the prescribed or standard positions. In addition, you can create a dedicated space for better aesthetics. (1)

Mount the tweeter within 12 inches of the woofer to hear the bass and treble.

Installation of a car crossover

Step 1: Find a strategic crossover location

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid a short circuit.

Determine a strategic position, free from vibration dampness, while taking care of the moving parts of the vehicle. (2)

Step 2: Install the crossovers next to the woofers

Keep your woofers close to the crossover to reduce sound distortion. The doors and the space behind the panels are perfect.

Step 3: Tighten the Crossover

Don't forget to tighten the crossover so it doesn't come off. Use screws or double tape.

Step 4: Connect the whole system

Use your vehicle's specific wiring diagram to connect your crossover. Your car's default wiring is fine as long as you don't turn on the amplifier.

Working with door panels

When handling door panels, remember to do the following:

  1. Before installing any part of the component speaker on the door panel, first determine the screws or clips that secure the panel.
  2. Disconnect the connection between the frame and panels and use screwdrivers to remove the screws.
  3. Remove any previously installed speakers and install the component carefully.
  4. When working with wires, make sure you understand the harness. Accurately adhere to the positive and negative signs embossed on the woofer/speaker.

Testing and Troubleshooting

After you finish installing the component speakers, check if it works. To verify that the installation process was successful, follow these steps:

  • Connect the appropriate components and turn on the speaker.
  • Evaluate the quality or clarity of the audio output. Carefully analyze the modulation of bass and treble. Enter your criticism and corrections. If you are unhappy, check the connections and tune the system.
  • You can customize dials or toggle buttons to achieve your desired taste.
