The main reason why you have to adjust the handbrake on the Niva is the wear of the rear pads. Of course, they do not wear out as quickly as the front ones, but you still have to tighten the handbrake after a certain run so that it can properly perform its task.

So, in order to get to the parking brake adjustment mechanism on the Niva, it is necessary to carry out this work in the pit. If you do not have such an opportunity, then you can simply crawl under the car, having previously slightly raised its rear part with a jack. Near the rear axle, you will see an adjustment mechanism.

You need to keep the center rod from turning with a flat screwdriver, and tighten the nut, thereby tightening the cable a little. It actually looks like this:

If, on the contrary, it is necessary to loosen the cable, then the nut must be unscrewed a little! I think the meaning is clear. After the handbrake began to hold the car on a slope from 2 to 4 clicks, you can tighten the lock nut and consider that the job is done.
