With prolonged use, the rear brake pads will wear out and over time the braking performance will be lost. But also, increased wear affects the operation of the handbrake. If the parking brake cable is not periodically tightened, then after a while it will become poorly kept on a slope even with the maximum number of clicks of the lever.

And in order to get to the adjustment mechanism, it is best to do this work either in a pit, or else raise the rear of the car with a jack so that you can crawl under it. A pit would of course be ideal.
