How to get a Saab dealer certificate

Saab was founded in 1945 in Sweden. It wasn't until 1949 that their first car was finally released, but the manufacturer was successful for the next 60 years. Their Saab 900 proved to be a popular model for two decades. Unfortunately, in 2011, the company eventually ran into problems. A bumpy ride followed, with several failed buyouts and other problems. Since 2014, no new model has been produced, despite the fact that Saab is the only company that has a royal warrant from the king of Sweden to build cars. However, countless people still own Saabs and there is a very passionate culture of drivers who refuse to drive anything else. So if you're looking for a job as an automotive technician, it might be worth looking into a manufacturer.

Become a certified Saab dealer

The problem is that currently no one can offer you a Saab Dealership Mechanic Skills Certification. This does not mean that you cannot get such a job, just that there is no organization that would provide you with such a certificate. At the time you are reading this, things could change if another company buys Saab and starts building cars again.

However, not all is lost. There was once a certification program, but after GM bought the company, it was dropped. Because Saab cars were still in production at the time, demand for mechanics was still high, so GM simply integrated Saab-specific skills into its GM World Class program. UTI has a GM course that you can also take.

Therefore, one approach would be to choose one of these two courses. Both will teach you how to operate a variety of vehicles including:

  • GMC
  • Chevrolet
  • Buick
  • Cadillac

You can even take Saab specific training, although the above will clearly be enough to get you a coveted auto mechanic job anywhere in the country with enough security.

Search for a Saab Master

Another approach is to someday learn from someone who has experience in what you want to do and if the certification program ever comes back you will be in a much better position to be accepted and complete the course .

Unfortunately, finding someone to coach you will not be easy. If there is a dealership in your area that still sells Saab, start there and see if they are interested in your training. It will definitely help if you already went to auto mechanic school, and even better if you already have shop experience.

Another option is to contact any stores in your area that sell exotic and/or foreign cars. See if they have any interest in recruiting you, although again you will be much more likely to land the position with a certificate from an auto mechanic school and some experience.

Ideally, you want to learn from a Saab master technician. They're getting harder and harder to find these days, but if you really enjoy working with Saab - and don't mind moving for it - then you might be able to track it down. Of course, you still have to convince them to take you under their wing.

The big problem here is that Saab is now largely out of production and there is little sign that this will change. Until that happens, the demand for Saab technicians will remain low. For proof, see if you can find any auto mechanic jobs that specifically mention experience with these Swedish vehicles. Depending on where you live, you may find one or two. However, most of you will not find them.

As we mentioned earlier, these cars are still popular with a dedicated group of people who can't imagine driving anything else, so if you really want to focus on a Saab, it's far from impossible to learn how to do it. Just be aware that currently you cannot get a certificate from the company.
