How to Get Certified as a Smog Specialist in Idaho

Emissions testing is an important part of car ownership these days. This means that someone has to perform these checks and any necessary repairs. If you're looking for a new job opportunity as an automotive technician in a specialized field, pursuing an Idaho smog degree might be a good way to go. Each state has its own laws and training, testing, and certification requirements to qualify to work in emissions testing and repair.

Idaho requires vehicle emissions testing in Ada, Canyon, and the City of Kuna counties. This is because these are the only air sheds that meet the air quality levels required for testing. Each area has its own testing process, although they all interact with each other - a test in one district will be considered valid in another.

Each county also has different testing and repair procedures. Below we will review the requirements of the Ada County Emissions Inspector.

Requirements for an Emissions Specialist License

License rules are governed by the Ada County Air Quality Board. To be eligible to apply for a license, you must pass a written or oral emissions specialist qualification test that covers:

  • Operation of the exhaust gas analyzer, including performing the span gas procedure
  • Some parts of the rules and regulations that are available on the AQB website.

You must also pass a performance test demonstrating competence in:

  • Visual Inspection of Emission Control Equipment on 1984 and Newer Vehicles
  • Proper analyzer use, care, maintenance and gas coverage
  • Conducting Emission Tests
  • Proper use of AIR program forms

The application and license will be issued by the Air Quality Council. Some inspection stations will pay for your training and certification, so be sure to ask about this possibility when hiring an emission inspector.

Inspector retraining

AQB may require emission technicians to update their qualifications. In this case, AQB will notify you through your AIR Program Station.

How to Become an Emissions Repair Technician

In Idaho, vehicle owners can choose the repair shop of their choice to fix any potential issues that caused their vehicle to fail its inspection. If you're looking to get into exhaust repair, check with the shop you're applying to to see what qualifications they require. These may include ASE certification in areas related to emissions such as engine performance and exhaust systems. Having these ASE certifications is definitely a great way to increase your chances of being hired by a store.

Canyon County

The Canyon County Emissions Program is operated by Applus Technologies, Inc. This company is a contractor that provides test facilities, technician training, and other services to municipal and state governments for their smog/emissions testing programs. Contact the county to find out what the requirements are to become a technician in this area.
