How to Get a Smog Specialist Certificate in Massachusetts

In a competitive field like auto repair, you want to maximize your chances of getting the right auto technician job for you. This can mean expanding your skill set and gaining certain credentials that will make you more marketable and also potentially increase your auto mechanic salary. Training in specialties such as smog testing and exhaust repair can be a great way to improve your career.

Not all states require smog checks, and each state has its own unique testing and repair program. The State of Massachusetts has mandatory annual statewide emissions checks and a comprehensive program to conduct these checks.

How to Become an Emissions Inspector in Massachusetts

Like many states, the State of Massachusetts enters into a contract to manage vehicle emissions inspections. The program is operated by Parsons Commercial Technology Group, Inc. Parsons hires inspectors and provides the necessary training.

To become an inspector, you must apply for Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Inspector Training or contact Parsons at 877-834-4677. The non-profit inspector application fee is $157, which must be filed with your application. After you apply, you will need to successfully complete a state-approved training course provided by Parsons.

How to Become a Registered Emission Repair Technician

Massachusetts residents whose vehicles have failed a smog test can get the repairs they need at any workshop of their choice. However, to be eligible for liability relief if the vehicle fails to pass inspection, repairs must be carried out at a registered emissions repair shop. These are stores that employ specialists known as Registered Emission Repair Technicians (RERTs). To receive this title, you must:

  • Register with Parsons
  • Have an ASE L1 certificate
  • Complete the mass module training and pass the relevant exam.
  • Complete the OBD diagnostics and repair course and pass the exam

Training and testing of the Mass Module are conducted online.

The Database Repair Training is a 28-hour course consisting of 20 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of hands-on training and testing. This course takes place at the Shrewsbury Motor Assistance Centre. More information about the OBD course, including schedule and application, can be found here.

To get started as an MA RERT, print and complete the application and mail it, along with copies of your ASE certifications, to the address at the top of the form.

How to Renew or Recertify as an Emissions Repair Technician

Your vehicle inspection license must be renewed annually. In addition, you must recertify every two years.

Once you become a Massachusetts RERT, you will also be required to participate in a four-hour continuous learning module each year to maintain your certification.

If you are already a certified mechanic and would like to work with AvtoTachki, please apply online for the opportunity to become a mobile mechanic.
