How to Get a Smog Specialist Certificate in New Jersey

In the state of New Jersey, registered vehicles must be tested for smog or emissions every two years. Only state-certified technicians can perform these checks. If the vehicle fails the smog test, it must be repaired by a licensed smog technician.

Smog Specialist Certificates and Smog Inspector Certificates are awarded by the state and can offer those looking for an automotive technician job a great way to build their resume.

New Jersey Smog Inspector Qualification

To become a New Jersey Smog Inspector, a mechanic must complete the same training from a state-approved training provider that is required to obtain a standard vehicle safety inspection license. The state has 13 approved inspector training providers located in the following cities:

  • Mahwah
  • Bridgewater
  • Marlboro
  • Middletown
  • Dayton
  • Somersault
  • Bayville
  • marlton
  • Mount Holly
  • Blackwood
  • Maplewood
  • Pleasantville
  • Springfield

Mechanics must complete 8-16 hours of training at any of these approved locations. After completing this training, they must apply for the Automotive Commission Exam, pass a written exam of at least 80%, and pass a hands-on emission test demonstration.

Each specific training provider dictates its own fees. The inspector license fee is $50. Each licensed training course largely covers the following learning objectives:

  • Causes and effects of air pollution
  • Rules and Procedures for Emission Tests
  • Operation, configuration and verification of the emission system
  • Operation and maintenance of emission components
  • Inspection Safety Rules
  • Quality control during inspection

Smog repairman certificate

There are three steps to get certified in New Jersey to repair emissions systems. It:

  • The technician must register for an ERT (Exhaust Gas Repair Technician) identification number.

  • The technician must meet all of the requirements outlined in the New Jersey Exhaust Repair Technician Initial Certification Requirements. There are two ways to meet these requirements. The first is a testing option for those with ASE certifications and experience; the second training option for those who do not have other certificates and experience.

  • The technician must report any ASE certification status to the New Jersey DEP, if applicable.

After completing these three steps and passing all tests and/or training, the technician will be certified as a smog repair technician.

Smog Check Requirements in New Jersey

The following types of vehicles must be tested annually for smog:

  • Gasoline or dual-fuel vehicles manufactured after 1996 with a GVW of 8,500 pounds or less, excluding all buses.

  • Gasoline or dual-fuel vehicles newer than 2014 with a GVW of 14,000 pounds or more, excluding all buses.

  • Diesel-powered vehicles manufactured no earlier than 1997 weighing 8,500 pounds or more, excluding all buses.

In addition, these vehicles are required to undergo an annual inspection:

  • Ambulances
  • Hotel buses
  • Jitney
  • Mobility aid vans
  • limousines
  • All of them
  • Paratransit
  • Taxi
  • Any commercial vehicle with a gasoline engine
  • Any commercially available diesel vehicle weighing less than 8,500 pounds.

Smog check process in New Jersey

During a smog check, a New Jersey auto service technician will run all the necessary emissions tests on the vehicle, depending on its year, make, and model. This will include ensuring that the gas cap is stable, completing OBD-II emissions testing and following all other procedures.

A smog check is valid for two or one year, depending on the type of vehicle being checked.
