How to Get Certified in Maine Smog

Getting a good job as an automotive technician often involves acquiring specific skills in a specific field. Smog testing has become commonplace in the United States, leading to the creation of an almost entirely separate exhaust repair industry. Each state has its own specific testing protocol, but they all have one thing in common: if a vehicle breaks down, the problem must be fixed.

The only area in Maine with mandatory emissions testing is Cumberland County. This testing is part of the Extended Vehicle Inspection Program, which requires all vehicles in Cumberland County to pass an annual smog test.

How to Become an Emissions Inspector in Maine

The Maine Traffic Police Department is the governing body responsible for issuing inspector licenses. You must be at least 17.5 years old and have a valid Maine driver's license to apply. You will also need to pass a criminal record and driver's license check. If you meet these conditions, you can either download the Inspection Mechanic Application online or submit an application request to:

Maine State Police - Traffic Division Vehicle Inspection Division 20 State House Station Augusta, ME 04333-0020

You must allow a minimum of 60 days for your application to be processed and approved. After your application is approved, you will be scheduled for a written test.

Once you have been approved to become an Inspection Technician, your license will be valid for five years. If you apply for renewal within a year of the expiration date, you will not have to take the exam again.

How to Become an Emissions Repair Technician

If a vehicle fails a Maine smog test, owners can have it repaired at any workshop of their choice. However, as in some other states, the ME designates certain mechanics as recognized repairers. The state considers these mechanics to be those who are professionally repairing automobiles or hold national certifications in emissions-related diagnostics and repairs. This means that in order to get a job related to vehicles that have not been tested for emissions, it is a good idea to meet these criteria.

The best way to become an exhaust repair technician is to earn an ASE certification in relevant areas of study, such as taking A1-A8 to become a master auto technician. Having an L1 certification making you an advanced engine performance specialist is also helpful.

Many of Maine's emissions testing sites are also repair shops, so it can be helpful to have an emission control technician's license, even if you work as a mechanic at one of these shops.
