How to get a driver's license in California

Like most other states, California has a phased driver's license program, which means that teens under the age of 18 must apply for a driver's license before they can get a standard driver's license. To get a driver's license, you need to follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in California:

Temporary permission

In California, a student or driver's license is referred to as a "provisional permit." This type of license is issued to California residents who are at least 15 years and six months old and have completed all steps required to obtain a permit.

While driving with a temporary permit, teens may drive with a parent, guardian, or other adult at least 25 years of age who has a valid California driver's license. This permit must be held for at least six months and the driver must complete at least 50 hours of practice (ten of which must be spent overnight) while driving with the permit before the driver can obtain another license. Only those under the age of 18 must have a permit before they can apply for a traditional driver's license.

California requires student drivers to complete a formal driving education course before they can apply for a temporary permit. To obtain a learner's permit, an applicant must pass a written exam and an eye test, pay all required fees, and submit required legal documents, including proof that they have completed at least 25 hours of a driver education course or program.

Required documents

When you arrive at the California DMV for your driver's license test, you must provide certain documents:

  • A completed application for a study permit signed by a parent or guardian.

  • Proof of social security number.

  • Original birth certificate or certified copy.

  • Proof of completion of a driver training program or certificate confirming current registration and participation.

  • Proof of identity and legal residence in the United States, in addition to the required birth certificate and social security number.

Exam

The driver's license test consists of 46 questions about state-specific traffic laws, safe driving rules, and traffic signs. The California Driver's Handbook contains all the information a student needs to take the exam. To get more practice, there are several online tests available. Potential drivers must answer at least 38 questions correctly in order to pass the exam.

After passing the written exam, the driver must pass a vision test and pay a fee of $33 to obtain a permit. The DMV currently requires all California drivers to provide a thumbprint. If the driver fails the written exam, he must wait two weeks before retrying and pay a retest fee. The driver can only take the test three times.
