How to get a driver's license in New York

New York State requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to start driving with a driver's license to practice supervised safe driving before getting their full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in New York:

Student permission

A learner's license in New York can only be issued to a driver who has reached the age of 16 and has passed a written test.

The learning license requires drivers to be accompanied at all times by a driver who is at least 21 years of age and who has a valid driver's license. With this permit, drivers cannot drive at all in the following locations:

  • On any street through New York park

  • On any bridge or through any tunnel in Triborough jurisdiction

  • On Taconic State Boulevard, Cross County Boulevard, Hutchinson River Boulevard, or Saw Mill River Boulevard in Westchester County.

  • In any DMV road test area

This permit must be held for a total of six months before an 18-year-old driver can take a road test to obtain a full driver's license.

Required documents

To apply for a NYC student permit, a driver must bring the following documents to the DMV when taking the written exam:

  • Proof of date of birth, such as a birth certificate

  • Proof of identification, such as a valid U.S. passport, government-issued ID, or proof of citizenship.

  • Social security card

  • Completed application

They must also pass an eye test and pay permit fees, which vary depending on the age of the applicant and other features:

  • Ages 16 to 16 and a half: $80 - $90.

  • 16 to 17 years old: $76.75 - $85.75

  • Ages 17 to 17 and a half: $92.50 - $102.50.

  • 17 and a half to 18 years old: $89.25-$98.25.

  • Ages 18 to 18 and a half: $80 - $90.

  • 18 to 21 years old: $76.75 - $90

  • Over 21: $64.25 - $77.50

The driver has the option to submit a vision test report from an eye specialist if they choose not to have a vision test at the New York DMV during the Student Permit Written Exam.

Exam

The NYC Student Permission Exam consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, 14 of which must be answered correctly in order to pass the exam. The exam covers all state traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. The New York DMV provides a driver's guide that includes practice questions that can be used to help the student gain the knowledge needed to pass the written exam.
