The NC Graded Driver's License Program requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to begin supervised driving to practice safe driving before obtaining a full driver's license. You must complete certain steps in order to obtain the initial limited student permission. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in North Carolina:

Limited permission to study

North Carolina has a tiered driver program that starts with a restricted driver's license. This permit is for teenagers aged 15 to 18 who have completed a driving course. This course must consist of a minimum of 30 hours in a classroom and an additional six hours driving a vehicle.

The Restricted Student Permit allows drivers to drive only when accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian, or a supervising adult with parental consent. This person must have had a driver's license for at least five years. A learner's license only allows drivers to drive a vehicle from 5:9 am to XNUMX:XNUMX pm for the first six months.

While driving during the training period, parents or legal guardians must register the required 60 hours of driving practice in order to apply for their full driver's license. At least ten of these hours must be at night. These hours must be reported on Form DL-4A.

How to apply

To apply for a student permit in North Carolina, a driver must pass a written test, a traffic sign test, a vision test, pay a $20 fee, and submit the following documents to the DMV:

  • Certificate of Completion of the Driver Training Course

  • Two proof of identity and age, such as a birth certificate or school transcript.

  • Proof of a social security number, such as a social security card or Form W-2.

Exam

The first exam a driver must take is a written test that covers state traffic laws and safe driving regulations. This license requires a practical driving test, as well as a written test, a traffic sign test, and a vision test.
