How to get a driver's license in South Dakota

The State of South Dakota requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to start driving with a training permit in order to practice safe driving under supervision prior to obtaining a full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in South Dakota:

Study permit

A South Dakota training permit can only be issued to a driver over the age of 14 who has passed the written test.

The learning permit requires drivers to be accompanied at all times by a driver who is at least 18 years old and has a valid driver's license for at least one year. Drivers with a learning permit may never drive from 10:6 a.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. During this time, the driver must follow one of two paths to proceed to the Restricted Minors Permit:

The first path requires a learner permit driver to hold that permit for at least 180 days and pass a driving test before progressing to a restricted minor permit.

The second path requires a driver with a training permit to hold that permit for at least 90 days and complete a driving training course in which they can score at least 80% overall. A driving training course must have been completed no more than 12 months prior to applying for a Restricted Juvenile Permit.

How to apply

To apply for a South Dakota study permit, a driver must bring the following documents to DPS when taking the written exam:

  • A completed application signed by a parent or guardian if the driver is under 18.

  • Proof of identity, such as a valid U.S. passport or certified birth certificate.

  • Proof of a social security number, such as a social security card or Form W-2.

  • Two proof of residence in South Dakota, such as a bank statement or school report card.

They must also pass an eye test and pay a $28 exam fee.

Exam

The South Dakota Study Permit Exam covers all state traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. The South Dakota DPS provides a driver's handbook that contains all the information student drivers need to take the written exam.

After completing the required training permit hours, drivers may apply for a Restricted Juvenile Permit. To apply for this permit, all required documents must be brought back to the local DPS office when the driver takes the driving test. If they refuse to take the driving test, they must also bring a certificate of completion of the driving training course. This permit is valid for five years and does not require a fee. This is the last step before obtaining a full adult driver's license.
