How to get an Idaho driver's license

The State of Idaho requires all drivers under the age of 18 to follow a phased licensing program that includes a permit for supervised training. To get a driver's license, you need to follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in Idaho:

Permit for supervised training

To receive an initial permit to study under supervision in Idaho, a resident must be at least 14 years and six months old, but younger than 17 years of age. This permit is required in order to start a driving course, but you cannot start driving until you have completed the course.

Once a student completes a driving course, they may drive with a licensed driver who is seated in the front passenger seat and is at least 21 years of age. During this time, the supervisor must supervise at least 50 hours of driving practice, including ten hours at night, and must certify that these hours have been completed before the learner driver can proceed to the next stage of the Idaho Certified License program. The permit must be held for a minimum of six months or until the student turns 17, whichever comes first.

In order to be approved for supervised training, Idaho requires prospective drivers to submit several required legal documents to the DMV. Drivers do not need to pass a written exam or eye test to obtain a supervised training permit, but they must pay the required fees to obtain a permit, which are non-refundable. These include a $15 permit fee and $6.50 administrative fees.

Required documents

When you arrive at the Idaho DMV for your driver's license test, you must bring the following required documents:

  • Proof of residence in Idaho, such as a school transcript.

  • Proof of identity that includes your date of birth, such as a certified birth certificate or US passport.

  • Secondary ID

  • Your social security card

  • Certificate of enrollment or high school graduation

Applicants must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who must bring a photo ID and sign the consent form.

Approved driver training programs

To progress to a driver's license, student drivers must complete a driving education program. Approved training programs in Idaho must include at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, six hours of supervised in-vehicle practice, and at least six hours of driving with an instructor. Most Idaho public schools offer this course as part of their curriculum and it is open to any student aged 14 years and six months. Idaho homeschooled students may take a driving course offered by a local public school if they meet the age requirements and are approved for supervised instruction.

When a student driver is ready to advance to the next level of the graduate license program, they must pass both a written exam and a road test.
