How to get an Indiana driver's license

Indiana requires all underage drivers to participate in the driver's license program. This program states that those under the age of 18 must obtain a student's permit, which progresses to a full license as the driver gains experience and age to drive legally in the state. To get a driver's license, you need to follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in Indiana:

Student permission

To apply for a learner's permit in Indiana, drivers must be between the ages of 15 and 17 and must currently be enrolled in a state-approved driver training course if they are under 16 years of age.

The course must include at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of driving instruction. If a driver is over 16 years and three months old, they do not need to complete a driving education to apply for a learner's permit.

When using a student permit, the driver must complete 50 hours of supervised practice, including at least ten hours at night. All driving must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 25 years of age. If a student is married, they may be led by a spouse who is at least 21 years of age.

To apply for a study permit, an Indiana teenager must bring the required legal documents, as well as an application signed by a parent or legal guardian, to the written exam. They will also have an eye test and be paid $9.

Required documents

When you arrive at Indiana BMV for your driver's license test, you must bring the following legal documents:

  • Two proof of address, such as a bank statement or school report card. For drivers under the age of 18, the parent or legal guardian must submit an affidavit of residence and provide their driver's license and proof of residence.

  • Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or a valid US passport.

  • One proof of Social Security number, such as a Social Security card or Form W-2.

  • Proof of citizenship for drivers born outside the United States.

  • Certificate of enrollment in a state-approved driving education program for drivers under 16.

Exam

The Indiana written exam covers all traffic laws, road signs, and driver safety information you need to drive on the roads. It also covers state laws that Indiana residents need to know to drive safely and legally.

The Indiana Driver's Guide, provided by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, contains all the information a student needs to pass the exam. They also run a mock exam through an iPhone or Android app that can help students gain confidence before taking the exam.

Failure to pass the exam results in a 24-hour wait before the driver can retake the exam.
