How to Get a Mississippi Driver's License

Mississippi is one of the many states that has a certified driver's license program. This program requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to begin supervised driving in order to practice safe driving prior to obtaining a full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting permission to study in Mississippi:

Student permission

Mississippi's student permit program has three levels. Drivers who are 14 years of age or older and enrolled in a driving training class at their school can apply for a driver's license valid only during a driving training course supervised by a course instructor.

Drivers who are 15 years of age or older and enrolled in a driving education program at their school can obtain a traditional learner's permit. With this permit, drivers can drive under supervision. This permit must be issued for at least one year before the driver can apply for an intermediate driver's license.

Drivers who are 17 years of age or older and enrolled in a driving education program at their school may apply for a driver's license with a shorter required period of ownership. This allows a teenager to obtain an intermediate license when they turn 18, rather than waiting a whole year.

Anyone using any of these learner permits must complete at least six hours of driving practice as part of their driver education program.

How to apply

The first step in applying for a Mississippi driver's license is to take a written driving test. To pass this test, drivers must provide the following documents to the local traffic police department:

  • Application with notarized signatures of both parents or guardians

  • Social security card that can't be metal

  • An official state-issued birth certificate with an embossed seal.

  • Proof of current school attendance and proof of enrollment in a driving education course

  • Two proof of residence, such as a bank statement or account.

Exam

The Mississippi Driver's License Exam covers all state traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. The Mississippi Driver's Guide, which can be viewed and downloaded online, contains all the information you need to pass the exam. To get extra practice and build confidence before taking the exam, there are many online Mississippi tests available, including timed versions.

In addition to paying a $7 permit fee, all drivers will be required to pass a vision test before obtaining a student permit. To replace a lost license, the driver will need to bring all the necessary documentation to the local traffic police department. The next step after obtaining a student license is to obtain an intermediate driver's license, which can be obtained one year after obtaining a student license or when the applicant turns 18 if he received a student license at 17 years old.
