How to Get a Kansas Driver's License

Kansas requires all new drivers to participate in a progressive driver licensing program. The first step in this program is obtaining a learner's permit, which progresses to a full license as the driver gains the experience and age to drive legally in the state. To get a driver's license, you need to follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in Kansas:

Student permission

To apply for a student permit in Kansas, drivers must be at least 14 years of age. A permit must be issued for at least 12 months before a driver can apply for a driver's license.

When using a learner's permit, the driver must complete 25 hours of supervised practice. All driving must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age. Student drivers should never have a passenger in the front seat who is not their leader and may never use a mobile phone while driving, except to report an emergency.

To apply for a study permit, a Kansas teenager must bring the required legal documents, as well as the parent's or legal guardian's written consent to their written appointment for the exam. They will also have an eye test and will be required to pay three fees: a $31 permit fee, an $8 photo fee, and a $3 eye test fee.

Required documents

When you arrive at Kanas DOR for your driver's license test, you must bring the following legal documents:

  • Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or a valid US passport.

  • Proof of residence in Kansas.

Acceptable documents for proof of identity include:

  • US Certified Birth Certificate
  • Current US Passport
  • Certificate of citizenship or naturalization
  • Valid permanent resident card
  • Valid I-94 document

Acceptable proof of residence documents include:

  • Bank statement or other mail from a financial institution
  • Voter registration card
  • Extract from the school for the current academic year
  • W-2 or 1099 not older than one year
  • Letter from a government agency

Exam

The Kansas Written Exam is taken in a multiple-choice format and covers all traffic laws, traffic signs, and driver safety information you need to drive on the roads. It also covers state laws that Kansans need to know to drive safely and legally. If a student submits a certificate showing that they have completed an approved driving education program, a written test is not required to obtain a driver's license.

The Kansas State Driving Handbook, provided by the Department of Revenue, contains all the information a student needs to pass the driver's license exam. There are also many practice exams online that can help students gain confidence before taking the exam.
