How to Get an Oregon Driver's License

The State of Oregon requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to start driving with a learner's license to practice safe driving under supervision before obtaining a full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting an Oregon driver's license:

Student permission

A learner's license in Oregon can only be issued to a driver over the age of 15 who has passed a written test.

The learning license requires drivers to be accompanied at all times by a driver who is at least 21 years of age and who has a valid driver's license. With this permit, drivers cannot ride with passengers who are not immediate family members. During this time, the driver must complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice and complete a government-approved driver training course. Alternatively, a driver may opt out of a driver training course if they complete 100 hours of supervised driving practice.

This permit is valid for two years, but must only be kept for six months before a driver who has completed the required number of hours can apply for a provisional license.

How to apply

To apply for a student permit in Oregon, a driver must bring the following documents to the DMV during the written exam:

  • A completed application signed by a parent or guardian.

  • Oregon High School Enrollment Certificate or School Leaving Certificate

  • Proof of official name, such as a school ID or military ID.

  • Proof of legal presence, such as a birth certificate

  • Proof of a social security number, such as a social security card or Form W-2.

  • Proof of residence in Oregon, such as a bank statement or mailed bill.

They must also pass an eye test and pay a $23.50 authorization fee and a $5 written examination fee.

Exam

The Oregon Driver's License Exam, or Class C Knowledge Exam, covers all state traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. It consists of 35 questions, 28 of which must be answered correctly in order to pass. The Oregon DMV provides a Driver's Guide that contains all the information student drivers need to take the written exam. The state also offers two mock exams in English and Spanish that prospective drivers can use to gain confidence in taking the exam. There is a separate guide for Oregon drivers who want to get a learner's license to drive a motorcycle or moped.

After completing the required hours with a learner's permit and holding a permit for at least six months, drivers may apply for a provisional driver's license. With this license, drivers can drive for a limited time without supervision until they can apply for an adult driver's license.
