How to position the headlights correctly in the car?

Night. The greatest number of accidents at this time occurs on the roads. The main causes are speeding, alcohol, poorly lit roads and poorly adjusted headlights. If in the case of the former we can ask you to be careful, in the case of misplaced lights, we will help you install them!

How should the headlights be positioned in the car?

Aligning lamps during technical inspection

When we are going to inspect a car, we can check it without any problems. Why do we check their location? This is necessary because incorrect positioning can lead to underexposure of the road or dazzle other drivers. Set the manual override switch to zero before testing. During the test, the vehicle must be unloaded and placed on a level surface. The next step is to determine the elevation angle, that is, the difference between the maximum and minimum height of the lights. After setting it, it remains to turn on the backlight and check the scale visible through the viewfinder in the measuring device.

The headlight setting at the station applies to all vehicles. It doesn't matter if our car has H4, H7 bulb with manual or automatic adjustment. The problem only occurs with xenon headlights. In addition to the appropriate equipment, which is a spectrophotometer, you will need a diagnostic tester. This is necessary because without any changes to the vehicle controller, after starting the vehicle, the headlights will be set to automatic and the operation will have to be repeated.

Most cars have 3 or 4-stage dimming. Their use is described in the vehicle manual.

  • Zero position - designed to drive a car loaded with the weight of the driver and passenger traveling in the front seat,
  • second position - when there is a full set of passengers on board, but the luggage compartment is empty,
  • the second level is when we travel in a fully loaded vehicle with a full set of passengers and luggage,
  • the third place is reserved for driving with a fully loaded luggage compartment and without passengers.

Manual adjustment

In addition to adjusting the lights at the vehicle inspection station, it is also possible to manually adjust the lights if our vehicle is not equipped with auto-leveling headlights. The headlights can be adjusted using a knob on the left side of the dashboard or, in the case of Fiat, from the on-board computer.

What is worth knowing about

Probably, none of you have come across the study of illumination or light intensity. They are usually not taken into account. The purpose of this test is to make sure that both headlights shine equally and do not dazzle other road users. Differences that occur can be caused, for example, by worn bulbs or a damaged reflector in one of the headlights.

ATTENTION!

After replacing the lamp, it is recommended to check the light setting - usually a change of setting is required. Do not touch the bulb with your fingers, as this will damage the glass surface and cause local eclipses, which means the bulb will burn out faster.
