How to prevent car theft

Protecting your car from thieves can save you the hassle of finding a stolen car or buying a replacement car. You can choose from many options to protect your vehicle, including using an alarm system, installing steering wheel lock devices, and using GPS tracking systems to locate your vehicle after it has been stolen. Whatever system or device you end up choosing to use, be sure to find one that suits you and fits your budget.

Method 1 of 3: install an alarm system

Necessary materials

  • Car alarm
  • car alarm sticker
  • Necessary tools (if you decide to install a car alarm yourself)

One of the main ways to protect your car from theft is to install a burglar alarm. Not only does the system beep when your car is broken into, a flashing light that shows it's armed can even deter thieves from messing with your car in the first place.

  • Functions: An alarm sticker showing your car is secure can be enough of a deterrent to make thieves think twice before stealing your car. Just make sure the sticker is clearly visible and legible so potential thieves know your car is protected.

Step 1. Choose an alarm. Buy a car alarm by comparing different models to find the one that suits you and fits within your budget. Some of the options available include:

  • Passive car alarms that activate whenever the car is locked or won't let the car turn on unless the correct key is used. The disadvantage of a passive alarm clock is that it usually works on an all-or-nothing basis, that is, when it is turned on, all functions are activated.

  • Active car alarms that you must activate. The advantage of an active car alarm is that you can use some features while disabling others, allowing you to customize the alarm settings to your liking.

  • FunctionsA: You also need to decide if you want a silent or audible car alarm. Silent alarms are limited to just notifying the owner of a break-in, while audible alarms let everyone in the vicinity know that something is happening to your car.

Step 2: Install the alarm. Once selected, take your vehicle and car alarm to a mechanic or electronics store to have the system properly installed. Another option is to install a car alarm yourself, though make sure you have the necessary tools and know-how before doing so.

Method 2 of 3: Use LoJack, OnStar, or another GPS tracking service.

Necessary materials

  • LoJack device (or other third party GPS tracking device)

Another option available when it comes to protecting your vehicle from theft involves using a GPS tracking service like LoJack. This service contacts local authorities when your vehicle is reported stolen. They can then use the GPS device installed on the vehicle to find out where it is and retrieve it. While these services cost money, they are one of the easiest ways to get your car back if it's been stolen.

Step 1: Compare GPS Tracking Services. First, compare the various third-party GPS tracking services available in your area to find the one that suits your needs. Look for services that offer features that best suit your budget and what you're looking for in a tracking service, such as allowing you to use an app on your phone to keep track of your car while you're away from it.

  • FunctionsA: Some GPS tracking services use the GPS trackers you already have, eliminating the need for you to buy branded trackers for your vehicle.

Step 2: Set up a tracking system. Once you have found the service you want to use, talk to a representative to find out what steps you need to take to start using their services. This typically involves installing the tracker in an inconspicuous location on your vehicle and registering the VIN of the device and vehicle in the National Crime Information Center database, which is used by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.

Method 3 of 3: Use devices to lock the steering wheel in place

Necessary materials

  • Club (or similar device)

Another way to protect your car from theft is to use immobilization devices such as The Club, which lock the steering wheel, making it impossible for the car to turn. While this is not a reliable method of preventing your car from being stolen, it can provide enough deterrent to a potential thief to let your car pass and move on to the next one.

  • A warning: Although devices like The Club are effective for the most part, they probably won't be able to dissuade a determined hijacker. The club combined with some of the other methods available may be the best solution in the long run.

Step 1 Place your device on the steering wheel.. After purchasing the Club, place the device in the center and between both sides of the steering wheel rim. The device consists of two parts, each of which has a protruding hook that opens to the outer rim of the steering wheel.

Step 2 Attach the device to the steering wheel.. Then slide the device out until the hook on each section is securely attached to opposite sides of the steering wheel. Make sure they are snug against the steering wheel rim.

Step 3: Fix the device in place. Lock the two pieces in place. A long handle protruding from the device should keep the steering wheel from turning.

  • FunctionsA: Better yet, install a steering wheel that you can take with you when you are away from your car. A thief cannot steal a vehicle that he cannot drive.

You must take the necessary steps to protect your vehicle from theft, especially if you have a newer vehicle model. When installing devices such as a car alarm or GPS tracking system, consult an experienced mechanic who will advise you and possibly install it to make sure the job is done correctly.
