How to prevent your car's diesel engine from freezing in winter?

Paraffin is a compound that increases the calorific value of a fuel, but in extreme cold conditions it can form small wax crystals.

Winter has come and low temperatures are forcing drivers to change their driving mode, car maintenance is changing a bit, and the care we need to have with our car is also different.

The low temperatures of this season not only affect the electrical system and the car's battery, but also the mechanical part is affected by this type of weather. Owners of vehicles with diesel engines have to take care that this liquid does not freeze.

In other words, your car may be fully serviced and all of its systems may work properly, but if the diesel in the tank freezes, the car will not start.

This can happen because when the temperature falls below -10ºC (14ºF) the gas oil (diesel) loses fluidity, preventing the fuel from reaching the engine. To be exact, below this temperature range it is the paraffins that make up the diesel that begin to crystallize. When this happens, the diesel stops flowing as it should through the filters and the pipes that go to the injectors or the intake pump, i

El diesel, also called diesel o gas oil, is a liquid hydrocarbon with a density of more than 850 kg/m³, consisting mainly of paraffins and used primarily as a fuel for heating and diesel engines.

It is worth mentioning that diesel does not freeze. Paraffin is a compound that increases the calorific value of the fuel, but in extremely low temperature conditions it can solidify, forming small paraffin crystals.

To prevent the diesel from freezing, some additives can be added, as the main fuel distributors do.

These additives are usually based on kerosene, which does not freeze until 47 degrees below zero. A trick that works, in case we do not have one of these additives (on sale at gas stations), is to add a little gasoline to the tank, although it should not exceed 10% of the total.
