How to convert kilowatt hours (kWh) of electric vehicle energy to liters of fuel?

How to convert energy consumption in an electric car to combustion? How much energy do electric cars consume? What is the battery capacity in electrics compared to the capacity of fuel tanks? Let's answer these questions.

Table of contents

  • A small car: 5 liters of gasoline = 15 kWh of energy
    • A modern electrician = the equivalent of a combustion car with a 7-15 liter tank
    • How much does it cost to drive 100 kilometers? 1: 3 in favor of the electrician
        • How to fight fumes that block chargers

The equal sign means that a car burning 5 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers would require about 15 kilowatt hours of energy for the same distance. These are approximate and estimated data that should facilitate the conversion of combustion into energy consumption and the conversion of battery capacity into fuel tanks.

If we like to drive faster either the car is larger, it should be assumed that each 7,5 liters of gasoline consumed would correspond to the consumption of about 20 kilowatt hours of energy. This is confirmed by the Tesla Model 3 test conducted by the Motor Trend portal.

A modern electrician = the equivalent of a combustion car with a 7-15 liter tank

What does it mean in a duel fuel tank vs battery? Well, modern electric cars have a battery capacity equal to a fuel tank with a capacity of 7 to about 15 liters (range 120-250 kilometers).

The Opel Ampera E and all Tesla with about 25 liters of "fuel tank capacity" stand out from this list.

How much does it cost to drive 100 kilometers? 1: 3 in favor of the electrician

When calculating costs, it is not so easy, because it is difficult to find round numbers here. One kilowatt hour of energy costs at most PLN 60, while a liter of fuel costs about PLN 4,7. So driving 100 kilometers with an electrician costs about PLN 9 - assuming that we only charge at home, at the most expensive possible tariff - while driving 100 kilometers in a combustion engine car costs at least PLN 24.

From poverty, it can be assumed that the costs are approximately 1: 3 in favor of an electric car.
