How to sell a used car to California

The California Auto Retirement Consumer Assistance Program offers an incentive to people who want to get rid of a used car if they qualify.

Similar to the Cash for Clunkers program, which was discontinued in 2009, the State of California has a vehicle recall facility under the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP), which offers various incentives to eligible applicants based on their eligibility criteria. This program is run by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) and offers $1,500 for each recalled working vehicle, or $1,000 if the owner decides to sell it for junk.

To find out when you are eligible for assistance, BAR has a special calculator that works based on its criteria so that each applicant can check their eligibility. It is available from you and requires answers to two simple questions: the number of family members and the gross household income (which can be broken down by months or years).

The range of eligibility may vary for each applicant depending on their circumstances. In cases where your income exceeds program expectations, the calculator allows you to apply for any of the incentives. In more specific cases, the range is reduced and may show one or the other option.

Regardless of the promotion that the applicant is applying for, some additional conditions must be provided for it:

1. The person requesting it must be the owner of the vehicle and have title to it in their own name.

2. You must not have benefited from this program within the last 12 months.

3. The State may require the applicant to submit a failed smog test. In doing so, it indicates that the car needs to be removed in order to contribute to reducing emissions, which is one of the main initiatives of California as a state.

4. Must be registered in the applicant's name and with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

In addition to these conditions, for each award, BAR establishes specific characteristics that must be present in the vehicle that will be presented. The application process for this type of incentive may be one for which BAR recommends, among other things, having documents related to vehicle ownership on hand.

When the application is approved, it's time to hand over the car to the authorities. If the procedure cannot be done online, the applicant can use it to complete and enter at the nearest BAR office.
