How to renew your car registration in Kentucky

You can only commute to and from work in Kentucky in a vehicle that you are authorized to drive on a daily basis. There are a variety of things a person will need to do to keep their vehicle legal, such as registering it with the Vehicle Licensing Department of the Kentucky Department of Transportation.   • Validity of the current renewal
  • Renewal fee you will have to pay

Take advantage of the online update system

To use the online system, you must meet certain criteria. Here are the things you will need to use this system:

  • Your current address is on file with the county clerk.
  • You own a vehicle
  • There are no unpaid vehicle taxes.
  • Your current registration is on file with the county clerk

If you meet these criteria, here's how you'll need to renew:

  • Go to the Vehicle Licensing System website
  • Enter your vehicle number
  • Insert title number
  • Give the site your email address
  • Enter your phone number
  • Pay the fees you owe

Conducting the process in person

If you wish, you can personally go through the registration renewal process. To do this, you need to apply to your local DMV with the following items:

  • Registration certificate
  • car insurance documents
  • The money you need to pay the fees you owe

You will have to pay some fees when you upgrade to this renewal. Here are the fees you may expect to pay during this process:

  • Upgrading a standard car will set you back $21.
  • The motorcycle upgrade will cost $18.50.
