How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in Vermont

Each state requires vehicle owners to register their vehicles. Registration is important for a number of reasons, including paying taxes (buying your tokens), issuing and renewing license plates, ensuring that drivers are subject to emissions testing when needed, and many other reasons.

You will need to register your car when you purchase it, and this is often included in the cost of buying a car if you visit a dealership. However, even if you're buying through a private seller, you'll need to register it yourself by filling out the appropriate DMV form, which can be found on the Vermont DMV website. If you're moving to a new state, you must register your vehicle within a set period of time (often 30 days, but some states have different laws - Vermont gives you 60 days).

In Vermont, you can renew your registration in several ways. You can do this by mail, through the state DMV online service, in person at a state DMV office (in certain locations only), or through a city clerk in certain cities.

Renew by mail

If you want to renew your registration by mail, you need to:

  • Send your registration payment to the following address:

Renew with the city clerk

To renew your registration with the city clerk, keep the following in mind:

  • Only certain city employees can renew your registration.
  • All city clerks only accept checks and money orders (no cash).
  • Payment must be for the exact amount.
  • You can only change your address when you renew through the city clerk.
  • Clerks cannot renew a registration if it has expired for more than two months.
  • City clerks cannot process heavy truck registrations, oversized vehicle registrations, driver's license transactions, IFTA agreements, or IRP registrations.
