How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration in West Virginia

The state of West Virginia requires vehicle owners to register their vehicles each year. Registration fees are used by the Department of Motor Vehicles for road maintenance and other purposes. All updates must go through the DMV.

You should receive a renewal notice approximately 30 days before your current registration expires. The notice will contain important renewal information, including the amount you will have to pay and the specific date by which you must renew your registration. If you have not received a renewal notice, you will still need to renew your registration. You will need to use the information you have and still pay on the due date.

West Virginia allows you to pay up to two years at a time. One year registration costs $30 and two years is $60. If you need a duplicate registration it's $5 and if you need a duplicate license plate it's $5.50.

Please note that while emissions testing is not required in West Virginia, your vehicle must pass an annual safety inspection. You must have an inspection sticker on your vehicle to be legal.
