How to renew your car registration in Florida

Associated with updating the information that appears on the license plates, renewing a Florida vehicle registration is a process that must be done every set period of time.

When it comes to registration renewal, the Florida Department of Highway and Motor Vehicle Safety (FLHSMV) sets several cycles that vary by vehicle type and owner type. As in other states, .

The renewed registration reduces the risk of losing privileges granted to the FLHSMV, as this government agency has the power to revoke or suspend them if drivers do not comply with the process by the deadline.

When do I need to renew my car registration in Florida?

As already mentioned, the duration of the registration - and the period of its renewal - will directly depend on the characteristics of the vehicle and the type of its owner. In this sense, the following cycles are established:

1. If it is a standard vehicle (like most average drivers), registration must be renewed annually, no later than 90 days before the owner's birthday. When a vehicle is registered to several persons, the date of the first of them, which is indicated in the documentation, is considered.

2. If the vehicle is in the name of a company, the registration must also be renewed annually, but the deadline is the last day of the month in which it was originally registered.

3. In the case of a mobile home or any vehicle for "recreational" purposes, the renewal must also be made annually for a period that starts 31 days before 31 December.

4. In the case of motorcycles, the registration is also annual, with the deadline being the last day of the month in which the registration was originally made.

5. In the case of commercial vehicles (any type, including semi-trailers, heavy vehicles, tractors, buses, etc.), registration must be renewed every six months, with two pre-determined deadlines: 31 May and 31 December. . . . In some cases, an annual renewal is allowed.

Some drivers may also be eligible to renew their registration every two years. In these cases, determined by the FLHSMV, the rates are doubled, but this can be a much more convenient and comfortable option.
