Fundamental Recognition

Before drilling a hole to install a striker on a door frame, it is very important to know some dimensions and dimensions of the internal parts. They are required for the installation process.

The height of the handle from the finished floor is the first and most important. The distance from the close edge of the door to the center of the handle is then measured. Called the backset, the first variable usually stays between 36 and 38 inches. To keep things in order, you can look at other doors in your home.

On the other hand, the rear clearance for interior doors should be 2.375 inches and for exterior doors approximately 2.75 inches. The intersection of the height of the rear seat and the handlebar is known as the center of the hole in the face. To enter the castle, you must make a round hole.

The second hole for assembling the latch is known as the edge hole. Many lock sets have a cardboard template to ensure that the two holes line up. Drills should be selected using the diameters given in the template.

Getting Started - How to Drill a Hole to Install a Door Striker Plate

Now let's focus on how to drill a neat hole to install the door striker plate.

The image below shows the tools you will need:

Step 1: Make the necessary marks after taking measurements

The door must remain partially open. Then tap one spacer on each side to ensure stability. Mark the edge of the door by measuring the height of the handle.

After that, extend the mark with a square. He should cross the border of the door and land three inches from one side.

Make sure the template is properly aligned before placing it on the edge of the door.

Poke an awl or nail right down the middle of the face hole of the template to mark it on the door. The same method should be used to mark the center of the door edge hole.

Step 2: Make a Pilot Hole

Place a pilot drill from the hole saw and cut a pilot hole right at the end hole mark.

There should be even contact between each tooth. After that, you can drill a hole. It is extremely important to keep sawdust out of the area around the cut. Therefore, be sure to periodically remove the saw to remove dust. (1)

Stop when you see the tip of the pilot nozzle sticking out.

Now go to the other side of your door. You will use the pilot hole you created earlier as a template to orient the hole saw. Use this to drill the face hole.

Step 3: Drill a hole for the door striker

You will then need a 7/8" shovel. Place the tip exactly where the mark on the edge is.

Cut through the edge of the door with a drill at medium speed. Stop when the tip of the drill is visible through the hole in the butt.

Avoid applying too much force when operating the drill. Otherwise, there is a chance to saw through the wood. Continue drilling the edge hole with care.

Step 4: Mark the Location of the Striker Plate

Make a cross mark 11/16" or 7/8" from the edge of the jamb for interior doors, depending on where the lock bolt touches the jamb. Center the striker at this mark and temporarily secure it with the screw. Draw a line around the lock plate with a utility knife, then remove it. (2)
