How to Drill a Hole in Sea Glass (7 Step Guide)

This step by step guide will teach you how to drill a hole in sea glass without breaking it.

Drilling sea glass without proper training and the right tools is a waste of time. The only thing you get out of this is broken sea glass. Luckily, I've had a lot of experience with this over the years, and I hope to teach you all the sea glass drilling techniques in this book.

In general, to drill a hole in sea glass:

  • Gather all the necessary things.
  • Install a water pan with a piece of wood
  • Place the sea glass on top of the wood piece. Pour some water into the tray if necessary.
  • Wear the necessary protective equipment.
  • Connect the diamond drill to the rotating tool.
  • Start drilling sea glass.
  • Complete the drilling process.

You will find more information in the article below.

Before drilling

Before moving on to the how-to part, a few things need to be cleared up.

The process of drilling sea glass must be done delicately. Therefore, the instruments must also be delicate. For example, you cannot drill sea glass with a regular drill and drill bits. Rotary drills and diamond drills are the most suitable options for this task. In addition, the size of the drill greatly affects the drilling process.

Quick-Tip: You can also use a hanging drill for the process.

Sea glass drilling diamond drill bit size

Depending on the use of sea glass, the size of the diamond drill bit will vary. For example, if you are looking for a key ring, you will need a larger hole.

I often use 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm diamond drill bits for this kind of jewelry work. And for this task, a rotary tool or a hanging drill is excellent.

However, if you are looking for a hole larger than 3mm, use a diamond hole saw for the bottleneck.

For holes larger than 4 mm, you will have to use standard homemade drills. But remember that using these drills will not be easy, especially given the softness of sea glass.

7 step guide on how to drill a hole in sea glass

Step 1 - Gather the necessary things

For this sea glass drilling process, you will need the following things.

  • sea glass
  • rotary drill
  • diamond drill bits 2mm
  • Pencil or porcelain pencil
  • Collet or adjustable chuck
  • Water tray (plastic food container)
  • A piece of wood
  • water
  • Safety goggles, shoes and mask
  • Old clean cloth

Step 2 - Install the Water Tray

You must install a water pan and a piece of wood as shown in the image above. Don't forget to fill the container with water.

You are going to carry out the process of drilling inside the water. This is a little confusing for people who are using this technique for the first time. So here is the explanation.

Why should you drill sea glass in water?

When using a diamond drill, you should always use water as a coolant and lubricant.

As a rule, diamond drills are hollow. Consequently, water will get inside the drill and keep it clean and cool.

Step 3 - Place Sea Glass

Take the sea glass and mark the drilling location on it. Use a pencil or Chinese pencil for this.

Now place the sea glass on top of the wood piece. Then check the water level.

Sea glass must be at least one centimeter under water. If not, pour some water into the container.

Step 4 - Wear protective gear

During this drilling process, safety should be your top priority. For example, you are dealing with an electrical device inside the water. You never know when and where something might go wrong. So, put on safety shoes first. It will protect you from any electric shock or electric shock.

Then find suitable goggles and put them on to protect your eyes. Wear a face mask during this drilling process. It will protect you from dust and debris that may float up during the drilling process.

Having put on the necessary protective equipment, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 5 - Connect the diamond drill to the rotary tool

Now take an adjustable chuck and connect it to a rotating tool.

For this demo, I am using a Dremel Multipurpose Chuck with a Dremel 3000 Rotary Tool.

Properly tighten the multipurpose chuck on your Dremel 3000.

The side with the hole should go inside the Dremel 3000.

Then press the blue button on your Dremel 3000.

While pressing the button, turn the plastic screw located on the multifunction chuck. This will widen the teeth of the multi chuck.

Quick-Tip: When tightening the cartridge, rotate it clockwise. However, turn the screw counterclockwise to widen the teeth.

Finally, insert the diamond bit into the chuck and tighten the connection. Remember that you must not release the blue button until the drill is connected correctly.

Once connected, the length of the drill must be sufficient for the drilling process. The multichuck must not come into contact with water during drilling.

Step 6 - Start drilling

You are now ready to start the drilling process. I'll cover sea glass drilling techniques in steps 6 and 7. Drilling should be done in two steps. You will get a much better idea after I explain it to you.

Plug your Dremel 3000 Rotary Tool into a suitable electrical outlet. Place the fingers of your left hand (if you are using your right hand for drilling) on the sea glass and hold it firmly.

Tilt the bit 45 degrees and make the initial cut in the sea glass. Remember to use the drill at low speeds.

Why should I make the initial cut?

The purpose of the initial cut is to prevent the drill bit from sliding on the surface of the sea glass. For example, drilling straight down a vertical line can be a little tricky. So be sure to use this technique.

Once you've completed the initial cut, move the drill to a vertical position (the drill should be at the pencil mark) and continue drilling the sea glass. Apply very little pressure during this process.

Tip of the day: Remove the bit from time to time while drilling. This will allow water to flow into the hole. Eventually, the water will wash away any debris generated during drilling.

Stop the drilling process halfway through (one side of the sea glass).

important: Never use the high speed setting while drilling. This can damage the sea glass. In addition, high speed settings shorten the life of a diamond coated drill.

Step 7 - Complete the drilling process

Now flip the sea glass. Upon closer inspection, you will see the drilling site on the other side. Place the drill in this location and start drilling. Follow the same technique as in step 6.

This is a handy way to make an even hole in sea glass. If you only drill through one side of the sea glass, the hole on the other side will be uneven.

A few safety tips that might be helpful

A few safety tips can make a huge difference during this drilling process. Here are some of them.

  • Always keep your work area clean.
  • The drill extension must have a safe path from the socket to the drill.
  • In addition to the necessary protective equipment, wear an apron.
  • Keep your hand drill always dry. If it gets wet, use an old clean cloth to dry it.
  • Make sure the diamond drill is long enough. Water must not come into contact with the cartridge.
  • Proper ventilation of the work area is essential. This will reduce the chance of an electrical fire.

How to shape sea glass after drilling?

Molding sea glass requires considerable skill. Thus, you should try these methods only after you have mastered the seven-step guide above. With a little practice, you can engrave a design on sea glass. With that in mind, here are a few simple things you could do for beautiful sea glass.

Cut off the bumps

Most often, these sea glasses come with some kind of irregularities. Some people like it, and some don't. In any case, using a saw with a diamond wire, you can easily cut off these irregularities. This tool is one of the best tools on the market for cutting and shaping sea glass.

Making a bigger hole

Sometimes, after drilling, a smaller hole is obtained. Perhaps your drill was small or your calculations were wrong. However, by using a diamond twist drill, you can easily increase the size of the sea glass hole.

These diamond twist drills are typically used to ream holes that have already been created. With their vertically bonded diamond grit, these tools are ideal for this task.

important: Never use a diamond twist drill to drill holes. Use it only for widening holes.

I used a 2mm diamond coated bit to drill sea glass. The drill broke halfway through. Any specific reasons for this?

Whenever you use a diamond drill, you must use it with care. These drills can break quite easily. Therefore, correct execution is a must. Here are some common reasons that can break or damage a diamond drill bit.

Too much power

When drilling, excessive pressure can break the diamond bit. Otherwise, too much force will shorten the life of the drill. So always use medium pressure.

Not enough lubrication

For a diamond drill, proper lubrication is an important part. Otherwise, the drill will overheat and eventually break. This is why tasks like drilling sea glass should be done underwater. This is the best way to prevent overheating and you should regularly rinse your sea glass while drilling.

Unstable drill

Apart from the above two reasons, this is a common cause of drill breakage. You must correctly connect the drill to the chuck and the drill must be stable and vertical. Otherwise, it will brake regardless of speed or force.

Which drill is best for the above drilling process?

When it comes to sea glass drilling, there are two popular diamond drill bits. (1)

  • Small diamond drill
  • Small diamond crowns

In truth, both of these drill bits are excellent choices for sea glass drilling. But there are notable differences between the two.

For example, small diamond drills have a hard end; so they last longer.

On the other hand, small diamond core drills have a hollow end that allows water to flow into the interior of the drill. Because of this, the drill will not overheat easily. (2)
