How to get ASE recertified

ASE certification is provided by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and serves as a benchmark for mechanics across the country. Having an ASE certification proves to both employers and clients that a mechanic is experienced, knowledgeable, and fit for their job as an automotive technician.

ASE offers various levels of certification in eight different categories: Automotive Transmission and Transmission, Heating and Air Conditioning, Manual Transmission and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical and Electronic Systems, Engine Performance, and Engine Repair. ASE certification requires at least two years of work experience and passing an exam. While it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become an ASE Certified Mechanic, the process for becoming certified is simple and straightforward.

Every five years, ASE-certified mechanics must recertify in order to maintain their ASE certification. The purpose of recertification is twofold: first, to ensure that mechanics retain their previous knowledge, and second, to ensure that mechanics keep up with the ever-evolving technology in the automotive world. Fortunately, the ASE recertification process is simple.

Part 1 of 3: Register for ASE Recertification

Step 1. Sign in to myASE. Log in to your myASE account on the ASE website.

At the top right corner of the page is an area to log in to your myASE account. If you've forgotten your myASE username, search for "myASE" in your mailbox and you'll most likely be able to find it. If you have forgotten your myASE password, click the button that says "forgot your password?". next to the login button.

  • FunctionsA: If you still can't determine your myASE login credentials, or just don't want to sign up online, you can schedule a test by calling ASE (1-877-346-9327).

Step 2. Select tests. Select the ASE recertification tests you would like to take.

Once logged in, click on the button labeled "Tests" at the top of the page. This will take you to the ASE certification exam resources page.

Then click the "Register now" link in the sidebar to see the registration periods. If it is not currently one of the registration windows, you will have to try again as soon as possible. The current registration windows are from March 1st to May 25th, from June 1st to August 24th and from September 1st to November 22nd.

If you are currently in one of the registration windows, select all the tests you would like to take. You can take any number of recertification tests as long as you have already passed the initial certification exams in the categories you choose.

  • FunctionsA: If you choose to take more tests than you would like to do in one day, that's fine. You have 90 days after registration to take any recertification exams you have signed up for.

Step 3. Choose a place for the exam. Choose the location of the exam that is most convenient for you.

After selecting the tests, you will be prompted to select the test center where you would like to take the test.

Enter your location in the search box to find a testing center near you or a testing center that is most convenient to you.

  • FunctionsA: There are over 500 ASE Testing Centers, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a center that's right for you.

Step 4. Choose an Exam Time. Select the day and time of the exam.

Choose from the list of options on which day and at what time you would like to take the recertification tests.

Step 5: Pay. Pay fees for ASE recertification tests.

To complete your registration, you will need to pay the ASE certification test fees. You can pay the registration and test fees with any credit or debit card.

  • FunctionsA: Always keep your exam and registration receipts, as you may write them off as business tax expenses.

  • A warningA: If you cancel the test within three days of registering, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel after three days, you will be charged a cancellation fee and the rest of the money will be credited to your myASE account as ASE credit, which can be used for future tests and fees.

Part 2 of 3: Pass the ASE Certification Exams

Step 1: Prepare. Prepare for recertification exams.

If you're feeling completely unprepared or nervous about re-certifying ASE exams, you can learn a little. ASE provides study guides that are free to download and offers practice tests.

Step 2: Pass the tests. Come and get tested.

On the day of your recertification, arrive at your chosen exam center at least 10 minutes before your chosen exam time. Take the recertification tests you signed up for.

  • FunctionsA: Most ASE recertification tests are significantly shorter than the original certification exam you had to take. On average, there are about half as many questions in the recertification exam.

Part 3 of 3: Get your results and ASE recertify

Step 1. Track results. Track your results on the ASE website.

To see how you passed your recertification exams, log in to your myASE account. Use your account page to find the Track Your Scores feature, which will let you know your recertification exam scores once they have been processed.

Step 2: Get recertified. Receive a recertification notice by mail.

Shortly after you pass your recertification exams, ASE will mail your certificates to you along with your scores.

If you stay on top of your ASE recertification, it means that current employers, future employers, and all customers can still consider you a respected and trustworthy mechanic. You can use your ongoing ASE certification to expand your customer base and charge higher rates.
