The acceleration sensor is a small transmitter located in the throttle body, which is mounted directly on the engine inlet. This is a critical component in controlling the amount of fuel entering the unit. 

To identify it on your vehicle, you just need to locate the throttle body as it is located on the throttle body. Typically, there are only 2 types of this sensor; the first one has 3 terminals and the second one adds one more for the wait function.

How does the acceleration sensor work in your car?

The acceleration sensor is responsible for determining the state that the throttle is in and then sends a signal to the electronic central unit (ECU, its abbreviation in English).

If the car is turned off, the throttle will also be closed and therefore the sensor will be at 0 degrees. However, it can move up to 100 degrees, information that is instantly sent to the car's computer. In other words, when the driver presses the accelerator pedal, the sensor indicates that more fuel injection is required because the throttle body also lets more air through.

The butterfly determines the amount of air entering the engine, the signal sent by the acceleration sensor affects several areas. It is directly related to the amount of fuel injected into the engine, idle adjustment, turning off the air conditioner during hard acceleration, and adsorber operation.

What are the most common acceleration sensor faults?

There are some signs that help to detect a breakdown or malfunction. One of the most common signs that indicate a bad sensor is a loss of power, in addition to the fact that the engine may have pronounced jerks.

Another common malfunction of a faulty acceleration sensor occurs when the car is parked with the engine running. Under normal conditions, it should stay around 1,000 rpm. If we feel them rise or fall without any pedal input, it is clear that we have a problem with the car idling due to the control unit not being able to read the accelerator position correctly.
