What is a multi-link suspension in a car? Get to know its design

How does a multi-link work in an independent car suspension? It is impossible to say about the same solution in relation to the front and rear axles. After all, they are completely different and their tasks are different. 

If we are talking about a multi-link suspension, then the design of such a car involves the use of more than one rocker for one wheel. Usually cars are equipped with 2 or 3 wishbones on each wheel, which "separate" tasks while driving. One of them is located at the bottom of the wheel and acts longitudinally. Others may be transverse or oblique. They are usually located at the top of the wheel.

Multi-link suspension - better?

Let's start with the pros, because there are quite a few of them. Multi-link in the car definitely improves the selection of potholes on the road. Thanks to this, the ride is much more comfortable than in the case of traditional solutions with a single swingarm. During suspension operation, the shock absorber strut does not move when the steering knuckle moves. This is a plus in terms of the operation of the element, because you can not worry about its destruction.

The multi-link suspension is also characterized by a slight change in convergence and geometry under heavy loads. This significantly affects the comfort of the trip.

Double wishbone and multi-link suspension - is it safer?

This is another aspect of the issue that should be taken into account. A multi-link is different in that several elements are responsible for maintaining the geometry of the wheel. Disconnecting one pendulum from the steering knuckle does not affect the wheel coming off the axis of symmetry and its displacement across the direction of motion. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for traditional McPherson speakers. Therefore, double wishbone suspension and any other with multiple wishbones per wheel provides additional protection against such a failure.

Does multichannel have disadvantages? Are cars still available with a torsion beam rear axle?

Unfortunately, multi-link has drawbacks, and there are at least a few of them. The biggest thing from a driver's point of view is durability. Standard McPherson strut solutions may not provide sensational levels of comfort, but are much less prone to damage. 

A multi-link is characterized by the fact that it consists of several elements, to some extent interdependent. Therefore, it may happen that in some cars it is necessary to correct something in the suspension every now and then. And this is a big problem for almost every car owner. However, these are not all cons.

Multi-link suspension and design limitations

Now a little more about the multi-link suspension in the context of manufacturers. They are not always interested in the minimum possible amount for replacing a damaged item. However, multilink and constructors impose certain limitations. One of them is a very limited wheel travel. While this is not a big deal in passenger cars, it is very noticeable in SUVs or off-road models. 

In addition, the use of a multi-link suspension makes it necessary to complicate the design of the suspension. Adding elements usually results in an increase in the weight of the car. This must be compensated by the use of more expensive materials.

Multi-link design and luggage compartment of the car

This is another extremely important aspect of the matter. This applies, of course, to the rear axle and its design. The multi-link should have more attachment points, which effectively reduces the use of space for the trunk structure. For this reason, vehicles with a traditional torsion beam on the rear axle are reappearing on the market instead of a design with, for example, 3 wishbones. Designers are constantly looking for the best solution.

How do you know that multilink communication has failed?

Damage to one of the components of a multi-link suspension can be recognized in different ways. An error is indicated, for example:

  • pulling the car to the side in straight lines;
  • noise from under the wheels when driving through pits;
  • uneven tire tread wear;
  • less reaction to steering movements.
