How does the imperial micrometer scale work?

Micrometer bushings scale | |
| The sleeve scale of the imperial micrometer has a measuring range of 1 inch. It is divided into steps of 0.025 inches and numbered every 0.1 inches. |
Thimble micrometer scale | |
 | The thimble scale has a measuring range of 0.025 inches (the smallest value that can be measured on the scale on the sleeve). It is divided into 25 numbered increments, each corresponding to 0.001 inches (0.025 ÷ 25 = 0.001). |
Vernier scale micrometer | |
 | Some also have a sleeve vernier scale that provides the user with even greater accuracy (up to 0.0001 inches). The vernier scale has a range of 0.001 inches and is graduated with 10 numbered divisions, each corresponding to 0.0001 inches. |
