How to make dowels with your own hands?
Content
You can make your own dowels from long, thin strips of wood. You may find this is necessary if you run out of dowels, or you may decide that this is the best use of leftover wood from a completed woodworking project.
What do you need? | |
You will need a drill, a utility knife, a strong steel plate, and wooden planks that you are going to turn into dowels (called "blanks").
Making dowels | |
Step 1 - Creating a cutting toolSelecting a drill bit the same size as the rod you want to make, drill a hole through the piece of steel. This will serve as your cutting tool.
You can also buy dowel plates, which are sheets of metal with pre-drilled holes in standard sizes for dowels. If you have one of these, it can be used wherever the cutting tool is mentioned below.
Step 2 - Cut out the wood stockUsing a utility knife, cut one end of the wood stock so that it is narrow enough to fit through the hole you just drilled in the cutting tool.
You don't need to jump to conclusions unless you're planning on hunting vampires!
Step 3 - Attach the Wooden StockRemove the drill bit from the drill and secure a piece of wood stock in its place. Activating the drill should make the tree rotate.
Step 4 - Insert firewood into the holeInsert the cut end of the stock into the cutting tool, then activate the drill and push it all the way. This will cut the corners of the wood and create a round shank for the dowel.
You can also use a hammer to knock a piece of wood through the dowel plate to turn it into a dowel rod. Who said that a square peg cannot be inserted into a round hole? |
