How to make miters at both ends of the vault?
Content
In some situations, such as when installing cladding around a chimney, you may have a very small section of wall. On such walls, it is better to install a single piece of arch with beveled corners at each end, rather than using two pieces butt-joined.
This will create a cleaner look with fewer seams to sand after the vault is installed. However, this requires more attention and care when measuring and cutting the vault.
When taking measurements of a vault section with bevels at each end, all measurements are taken along the wall (not the ceiling) and marked at the edge of the vault wall.
The following guidelines are given for a chimney fitted to short chimney flanks that require an internal bevel at one end and an external bevel at the other.
For the longer side of the chimney, you will need a right outer corner at one end of the arch and a left outer corner at the other.
For the wall sections on either side of the chimney, you will need a right inside bevel cut at one end of the arch and a left inside corner cut at the other end.
Step 1 - Cut off the first miterIf you are cutting the arch for the right side of the chimney (from the point of view of the chimney looking into the room), start first by cutting the left inside corner on the far left side of the arch. For a vault installed on the left side of the chimney, start by cutting the right inside corner on the far right side of the vault.
Step 2 - Measure the wallThen measure the length of the wall. Mark this length from the miter cut along the vault wall edge.
Step 3 - Position the bevel of the bayIf the first bevel you cut was the left inside bevel, then place the right side of the vault bevel against the mark you placed on the edge of the vault wall. If the first cut was a right inside bevel, then place the left side of the vault bevel against the mark you placed on the edge of the vault wall.
Step 4 - Cut off the second miterWhile holding the bevel in this position, cut the second bevel to obtain the desired arch length.
Once you have cut the dome to the required angles at each end, attach it to the wall following the same procedure as described on How to fix the trim in place section How to cut inner miters with a round bevel. |
