How to Make a Jumper Wire (7 Step Guide)

Jumper wires are a good way to connect two dots without relying on a soldering iron. These wires are commonly used in breadboards and various prototype tools. With that in mind, today I will detail how to make a jumper with photos.

In general, to make a jumper, follow these steps.

  • Gather all the necessary parts.
  • Strip both ends of the wire with a wire stripper.
  • Remove the two fork pins from the breakaway header.
  • Insert heat shrink into bare wire (both ends).
  • Solder the pins to the wire.
  • Apply heat shrink.
  • Finally, connect the jumper to the breadboard.

Jumper types

As for jumpers, there are three different versions. Below you can find the list.

  • Men and women
  • male to male
  • From women to women

In this post, we will talk about male-to-male connection cables.

7 easy steps to make a jumper

Step 1 - Gather the necessary tools together

For this process, you will need the following tools and parts.

  • For stripping wires
  • Soldering iron
  • Several heat shrinks
  • Tear off the male header
  • Lineman turn
  • Several copper wires
  • Lighter

Step 2 - Strip the Wire

Here you will have to strip both ends of the copper wire. Strip the wire 1/3 to 1/2 inch. Use a wire stripper for this.

Step 3 - Separate the two male pins

Then take the breakaway male header.

You can find 20 or 40 fork contacts on a tear-off block. Use the lineman's pliers to pull out the two fork pins.

What are tear-off headers?

Breakaway connectors are great for connecting electrical devices. Also, you can use them with punched cards and breadboards. In electronics, tear-off connectors perform the same function as duct tape.

Step 4 - Insert the heat shrink

Now take two heat shrinks and insert them into the wire. These two heat shrinks are for the two ends of the wire. You must do this before connecting the pins to the wire. At this stage, you do not need to heat the shrink. We will do this in step 6.

Step 5 - Solder the Pins to the Wire

Then you can start the soldering process. Take a pin and solder it to the bare wire. Repeat the same for the other end of the wire. Use a soldering iron for this.

FunctionsA: For jumpers, we use small diameter wires. So, choose a soldering iron with a small sting. Otherwise, the soldering process will be a little difficult. (1)

Step 6 - Apply Heat Shrink

Then bring the heat shrink to the wire and pin. Use a lighter to heat up the heat shrink. During heating, do not forget to rotate the wire. Do the same for the other end of the wire.

Step 7 - Connect the Jumper to the Breadboard

Now you can test your jumper. Connect the jumper to the breadboard. (2)

If you need more than one jumper, follow the process above and make as many as you like.
