How to make your convertible soft top look great

As you look out your living room window, you notice something strange—the crocuses are starting to bloom. And that means that spring is just around the corner, and spring means road trips. This year, in addition to your usual house cleaning duties, you decide to add another chore - spend some time getting your convertible looking great.

Convertible convertibles are the most common style of convertibles. Soft tops tend to be cheaper than hard tops to repair, giving them a more authentic look and "convertible" feel. The main disadvantages are noise isolation and safety. But they provide weather protection and are easy to fold down when you want to feel the wind in your hair.

Soft convertible tops come in two types: vinyl and fabric (usually canvas). Even though they are different in appearance, they are similar when it comes to cleaning. Cleaning the convertible top is no different from cleaning the rest of the car.

Part 1 of 3: Thoroughly Clean the Top of the Convertible

Necessary materials

  • Car shampoo
  • Convertible top cleaner
  • Fabric protection
  • plastic care product
  • Defender
  • soft brush

Step 1: Clean the soft top. Clean vinyl or fabric tops with water and a mild car shampoo such as TechCare Gentle Car Shampoo. Use a brush with very soft, non-scratch bristles. A popular brand is Mothers.

Step 2: Use Convertible Top Spray. If your top is particularly oily or has dirt that won't come off with a normal wash, dampen the top and spray a convertible top cleaner, such as 303 Tonneau Convertible Top Cleaner, onto the stained area. Both of these products break down road grease and grime.

Step 3: clean the top. After spraying Convertible Top Cleaner onto the soiled area, use a brush to remove the dirt.

Step 4: Rinse the Top. After you have completely cleaned the top, rinse it to make sure that all the dirt is removed.

Step 5: Apply Protectant. Once the top is dry, use a sunscreen to prevent the sun's UV rays from discolouring the color and texture of the top. RaggTopp makes a spray that protects the look of your outerwear.

Part 2 of 3. If you have a fabric upper, be sure to check for leaks

Step 1: Check for leaks. Caring for a fabric convertible top is almost the same as caring for vinyl. However, over time, the fabric can crack and start to leak.

  • If your top starts to leak, spray it with a convertible top fabric protector that is water repellent.

Part 3 of 3: Make sure the window is clean

Step 1: Wash the windows. It's easy to forget that the rear window needs cleaning too. If you have an older model car, the window may have become a little yellow.

  • To fix window discoloration, use a plastic care product such as Diamondite Plasti-Care, which is used to clean plastic surfaces such as windows and headlights. If you continue to take care of the soft top of your convertible, it will significantly extend the life of your convertible. Chances are, if you own a convertible, you care about keeping it in good working order, so don't forget a cloth or vinyl top that protects you and the inside of your car from the weather.
