How to remove the oil pressure sensor electrical connector

This article will help you remove the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.

Working part-time as an electrician, I had to disconnect the oil pressure sensor connector several times. Successful removal of the connector is a prerequisite before replacing a failed sensor. In most cases, removing the oil pressure sensor connector is easy. However, the steps will vary depending on the year, make and model of the vehicle.

Access to the sensor connector on some vehicles may require additional parts to be removed.

In general, in order to remove the oil pressure sensor connector in your vehicle, you need to:

  • Remove the negative battery cable
  • Remove the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  • Use a ratchet and oil pressure sensor head to loosen the sensor connector.
  • Remove the oil pressure sensor from the car

I will go into more detail in the following sections.

Steps to disconnect the oil pressure sensor and connect the electrical connector

Required tools and equipment to replace the oil pressure sensor:

  • Socket for oil pressure sensor
  • Set of ratchets and sockets
  • repair manual or database
  • Torque wrench
  • Wheel stops

The location of the oil pressure sensor in the car

The oil pressure sensor is usually located at the bottom of the cylinder head in the car's engine block. However, it can also be attached to the cylinder head. It will be equipped with a block connector and one or two wires.

Carry out a preliminary inspection

If the instrument panel shows low oil pressure, the first thing to check is the engine oil level. A low oil level can lead to a drop in oil pressure and costly engine damage.

Carefully check the oil pressure switch or switch. Look for issues like damaged cables и bad connections. Check the engine oil pressure with a mechanical pressure gauge to make sure the wires are not damaged.

Checking the pressure gauge with a mechanical pressure gauge

This step eliminates the possibility of low oil pressure in the engine.

Here's How You Can Do It

  • Disconnect the oil pressure sensor (or switch) - detailed in the "How to remove the oil pressure sensor connector" step below.
  • Connect the mechanical gauge adapter to the engine.
  • Connect the pressure gauge to the adapter.
  • Start the engine and record the pressure gauge reading.

If the gauge reads normal, the problem is with the oil pressure sensor, the instrument panel, or the sensor circuit.

Since oil pressure sensors are relatively cheap, most people choose to replace them at this stage.

How to remove the oil sensor connector

Step 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable to make sure no current is flowing through the vehicle.

Step 2. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.

Step 3. Use a ratchet and oil pressure sensor socket to loosen the sensor. In some cases, you can replace the specialized sensor socket with a regular socket or wrench.

Step 4. Remove the oil pressure sensor from the vehicle.

How to install a new pressure sensor

Procedure

Step 1. Check if the new and old oil pressure sensors are of the same design. (Autozone has a handy app for entering your make and model.

Step 2. We put the sensor in place.

Using a torque wrench, tighten the sensor to manufacturer's specifications.

Step 3. Lubricate the threads of the oil pressure sensor with sealant - if the replacement sensor does not come pre-applied with sealant. Install a new oil pressure sensor to the engine.

(Attention: It is important to use a sealant to keep the device from leaking. A good tip is to use Permatex high temperature Teflon thread sealant (white) to apply a little to the middle of the tapered threads. Twist carefully and let stand.)

Step aerobics 4. Connect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.

Step 5. Connect the negative cable or battery cable.

Summing up

You can remove the oil pressure sensor using the simple procedure outlined in this manual. However, if you encounter some technical problems, stop the repair and contact a specialist to avoid spreading the problem.
