How to solder two pipes with a blowtorch?
Content
The procedures in this manual are for soft soldering or hard soldering—depending on your desired end result, you can either use hard solder or soft solder. For more information see Soldering vs Soldering
To solder two pipes together, you will need:
| ||
Step 1 - Clean the pipesTo begin, clean the two ends of the pipes you want to join with wire wool or a pipe cleaner. This will remove any dirt that could cause the new connection to fail. Keep cleaning the pipes until they are shiny as this means that any oxidation will be removed.
Step 2 - Apply FluxApply a small amount of flux with a brush until it is around the perimeter of both pipes. Then connect the two pipes together into a fitting. Then twist the pipes together clockwise and counterclockwise until the flux is distributed around the new joint.
Step 3 - Unroll the SolderRoll out the solder until it is long enough that you can hold the tip in place without burning yourself with a blowtorch.
Step 4 - Apply HeatUsing a blowtorch, heat the joint by moving the flame back and forth across it. You will know when the pipe is hot enough to solder as the flux will start to bubble.
Step 5 - Solder the ConnectionWhen the joint is hot enough, remove the blowtorch and touch the joint with solder at intervals around the joint. The solder will soften when heated and will pour into the gap between the pipes, forming a tight joint. Make sure you keep adding solder around the joint until you have a perfect circle.
Step 6 - Clean up the connectionUsing a damp cloth, wipe off excess solder while it is still hot to give the joint a clean look. |
