How to Become a Certified Mobile Vehicle Inspector (Certified State Vehicle Inspector) in New Hampshire

The State of New Hampshire requires all registered vehicles to be inspected for safety within 10 days of registration, once a year, and whenever ownership changes hands. In addition, vintage cars must pass inspection every April. Only certified inspectors working at state licensed vehicle inspection stations may inspect vehicles for safety. Certifications are issued by the state and can offer those looking for a job as an automotive technician a great way to build their resume.

New Hampshire Vehicle Inspector Qualification

To become a New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Inspector, a mechanic must attend one class at the Department of Motor Vehicles' monthly inspection school.

This is held at 2:00 AM and 6:30 AM on the first Tuesday of every month in Concord and other locations across the state at the discretion of the Department of Motor Vehicles. Mechanics must register for these classes at the dealer and inspection desk at (603) 227-4120.

After attending this monthly session at least once, the State Trooper will schedule an Inspection Mock Test for any mechanic who wishes to obtain an Inspection License. This test will include a physical demonstration of the mechanic's ability to inspect a vehicle in accordance with criteria taught in a monthly session. If a mechanic was previously licensed but has not performed any inspection for more than one year, he must attend at least one monthly class and retake that practice test.

The State Patrolman present will give the mechanic a Pass or Fail grade and then issue an Inspector's License to any mechanic who successfully proves their knowledge of all inspection processes. Monthly classes are open to the public and there are no previous experience or employment requirements to attend, take a test, or obtain a license.

Licensed vehicle inspectors may inspect vehicles at any state-licensed inspection station, which may include garages, trucking companies, or dealerships.
