How to Become a Certified Mobile Vehicle Inspector (Certified State Vehicle Inspector) in Nevada
The State of Nevada does not require vehicles to be tested for safety or emissions in order to be legally operated; however, Clark and Washoe counties require emissions testing for certain vehicles. For mechanics looking for a job as an automotive technician, a great way to build a resume with valuable skills is to get an inspection certificate.
Nevada Vehicle Inspector Qualification
In order to conduct inspections at an emission testing site in Clark or Washoe County, a mechanic must obtain a license from a local emission laboratory. To obtain this certification, an automotive service technician must have the following qualifications:
The technician must apply to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The technician must complete the Emission Testing Rules and Regulations course provided by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The technician must pass the written exam with a score of at least 80%.
The mechanic must currently be ASE certified in A-8, Automotive Engine Performance, or L-1, Advanced Automotive Engine Performance.
The mechanic must pass the practical demonstration exam without error.
Vehicle Inspection Requirements in Nevada
The following types of vehicles must pass an emissions test each year during the annual renewal of ownership:
Vehicles registered in Clark or Washoe County.
All gasoline powered vehicles, regardless of size.
Diesel powered vehicles are rated at 14,000 pounds.
As part of these three requirements, vehicles must be newer than 1968 in order to pass emissions testing. Brand new vehicles are exempt from testing until the third registration. All hybrid vehicles are exempt from the tax for the first five model years.
Emissions testing must be done within 90 days of vehicle registration for it to be valid.
