How to drill with a cordless impact driver?
While cordless impact drivers are primarily designed for driving in and out screws, they can also be used to drill holes if you use the right bit. When choosing a drill bit for use in a cordless impact driver, consider the following:

Drill shank | |
Cordless impact wrenches are equipped with ¼" hex keyless chucks. This means that if you want to drill holes, you need to use a hex shank bit of the same diameter.
Hex shank drills are currently available, but are not as common as round (straight) shank drills. Traditionally, only screwdriver bits had a hex shank, and all drill bits had a straight shank.
Hex shank diameter is measured along the edges.
percussion bits | |
When using a cordless impact driver, it is recommended that you use "impact bits", which are screwdrivers and drill bits specially designed to withstand the constant impact of the impact wrench's mechanism.
While impact drivers can generate higher levels of torque than most drill drivers, the range of impact drills available is quite limited. If you do not have an impact drill suitable for your drilling task, you can use a regular drill as long as it has a 1/4" hex shank. However, you should keep in mind that conventional drill bits may not be strong enough to withstand impact and can wear out or break easily. |
