How to care for curly hair in summer? Learn about proven grooming techniques

Curly hair in the summer requires special protection and care. As a result of prolonged exposure to the sun, they dry out. They become very susceptible to curls, brittleness and mechanical damage. They lose moisture, shine and elasticity, begin to fluff intensively.

Sun protection

How to care for curly hair during the holidays? First of all, it is necessary to neutralize the harmful effects of UV radiation. Professional UV hair filters work best in the form of masks, sprays or shampoos. Also, do not forget to cover your head, for example, with a hat or scarf.

Applying oil to curly hair

Curly and wavy hair will need emollients, that is, lubricating preparations with a moisturizing effect. They prevent the evaporation of water from the hair, make them dry and dull, make them more pleasant to the touch. They are available, among others, as a cream, mask, lotion or oil. We recommend flaxseed oil, almond oil, carrot oil, raspberry seed oil, hazelnut oil, walnut oil, grape seed oil, or avocado oil for those with waves or curls. Alternatively, you can also use shea butter, aloe, and coconut oil. Hair oils should be unrefined, free of parabens, paraffin and artificial colors. Oiling can be done either wet or dry.

The importance of silicone

Silicones are also emollients. They protect against fluffiness, mechanical damage and moisture loss. They emphasize their zest and add shine. They should be used in moderation because they can stay in the hair, overload it, and interfere with the absorption of nutrients found in conditioners or masks. Therefore, it is best to choose preparations with light, preferably volatile silicones that spontaneously evaporate from the surface of the hair.

Washing and hair care

Swimming in the sea or pool negatively affects the condition of the hair. Therefore, during the summer holidays, do not forget to regularly clean them from chlorine, sea salt, sand, dust and other contaminants. To do this, you need to use both shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo for curly hair should not contain alcohol, which has a strong drying effect. For everyday care, it is best to choose a gentle shampoo without SLS. In order to close the hair cuticles, it is recommended to rinse them with a cool stream of water. Curly hair conditioner may contain bamboo extract, jojoba oil, olive oil, provitamin B5, keratin, or milk proteins, among others. The use of conditioners allows you to give curly hair the desired texture, elasticity and shine, strengthen them and make styling easier. In this case, do not forget to rinse your hair with clean water after leaving the pool or the sea.

Drying and combing

In summer, there is usually no need to use a hair dryer, as they dry quickly on their own in the fresh air. However, if the weather is not favorable or we do not have time to wait, then it is worth using hair dryers with a cool airflow and an ionization function. Thanks to this, the hair is less prone to damage and we prevent the effects of static electricity. It is not recommended to dry curls in direct sunlight. This is due to the fact that wet hair is more vulnerable to the negative effects of UV radiation. So it is better to dry them in the shade in sunny weather. You can also help yourself with a towel, avoiding strong rubbing and pressure.

Curly hair looks best when wet. The best solution is to use a wooden comb with widely spaced teeth. Thanks to this, we avoid the effect of fluffiness and static on the hair.
