How to install a spoiler without drilling?

In this article, you will learn how to install a spoiler without drilling or making holes.

Drilling and punching holes in a car can reduce its value and cause irreparable damage. This is why I choose drilling as the last method whenever I install rear spoilers. What is the first choice, you ask? Below I will explain everything I know about installing a spoiler without drilling.

In general, to install rear spoilers without drilling (no holes in the rear bumper), you can use adhesive double-sided tape, and here's how to do it.

  • Clean the deck cover area with alcohol.
  • Install the spoiler and mark the edges with marking tape.
  • Attach double sided tape to the spoiler.
  • Apply silicone glue to the spoiler.
  • Install the spoiler on the car.
  • Wait until the adhesive tape sticks properly.

6 step spoiler installation guide without drilling

Installing a spoiler on your car without the use of a drill is not a difficult task. All you need is the right type of double-sided tape and the right execution. With that in mind, here's what you'll need for this process.

Things You'll Need

  • Rear spoiler
  • Masking tape
  • Double sided tape
  • 70% medical alcohol
  • Silicone glue
  • Clean towel
  • Heat gun (optional)
  • Stationery knife

With the above items assembled, you can begin the process of installing a spoiler on your vehicle.

Note: 70% rubbing alcohol is a good choice for alcohol paint preparation. Do not exceed 70 (e.g. 90% alcohol), otherwise the vehicle may be damaged.

Step 1 - Clean the deck cover

First of all, take some rubbing alcohol and pour it on a towel. Then use a towel to clean your car's deck lid. Be sure to clean the deck lid area where you plan to install the spoiler.

Step 2 - Place the spoiler and mark the edges

Then place the spoiler on the trunk lid and hold it firmly. Then mark the edges with marking tape. Mark at least three points.

This is a mandatory step, as installing the spoiler with tape must be done with care. Otherwise, you won't get the correct alignment.

Step 3 - Attach the adhesive tape

Then take double sided tape and stick it to the spoiler. Peel off one side of the tape and stick it on the spoiler. Now also remove the outer covering of the adhesive tape.

However, if necessary, leave the bottom edge of the spoiler adhesive tape (red part) intact. You can take it off after proper spoiler placement.

important: Don't forget to attach a piece of masking tape as shown in the image above. This will help you remove the outer adhesive after installing the spoiler on your vehicle.

If the temperature is low, the adhesive tape may not adhere well to the spoiler. So, use a heat gun and heat the tape a little, which will speed up the bonding process.

However, if the temperature matches the instructions perfectly, you don't need to use a heat gun. Most often, the ideal temperature is printed on the container of tape. So there will be no problem as long as you deal with this issue.

Quick-Tip: Use a box cutter if you need to cut the duct tape.

Step 4 - Apply Silicone Adhesive

Now take the silicone glue and apply it to the spoiler as shown in the image above. Two or three silicone patches are more than enough. This will help the gluing process well.

Step 5 - Install the rear spoiler

Then carefully take the spoiler and place it in the place marked earlier. Make sure the spoiler is level with masking tape.

Remove the protective film from the lower edge of the spoiler.

Next, we apply force to the spoiler and make the connection tight. If necessary, use a heat gun as in step 3.

Step 6 - Let It Link

Finally, wait for the adhesive tape to stick to the spoiler properly. Depending on the type of adhesive tape, the waiting time may vary. For example, you may need to wait 2 or 3 hours, and sometimes it may take 24 hours.

So, read the instructions on the container of duct tape or get the information you need from your local hardware store when purchasing tape.

Which double-sided adhesive tape is best for installing above a spoiler?

There are many double-sided tapes on the market. But for this process you will need a special adhesive tape. Otherwise, the spoiler may fall off while driving. So, what brand is suitable for such a task?

3M VHB double sided tape is the best choice. I have been using this tape for years and they are very reliable. And a much better brand than the most advertised internet brands.

On the other hand, 3M VHB Tape is specifically designed for automotive use and provides one of the strongest connections.

Quick-Tip: 3M VHB Tape can handle extreme temperatures. So you don't have to worry about losing a spoiler on the track.
