Here I will share four easy and quick ways to install window blinds without drilling holes.

Sometimes you may not have the right drilling tools. Or you don't want to drill holes in your newly renovated home. Not to worry. There are many ways to hang blinds without drilling. Below I plan to share with you the best techniques that I have learned over the years as a jack-of-all-trades.

In general, you can install blinds on windows without drilling:

  1. Use magnetic blinds
  2. Use adjustable tension rods
  3. Use Command Strips/Hooks
  4. Use self-adhesive blinds

I will go into more detail in the article below.

4 ways to install blinds (without drilling)

In this section, you will learn how to hang window blinds (without a drill). I know there are many different internet methods on this. But these are the most practical methods suitable for all home craftsmen.

important: Although these methods are for window blinds, you can also use them for door blinds.

Method 1 - Using Magnetic Blinds

You're missing out on a lot if you're not familiar with magnetic blinds. Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite methods. Also, this might be the easiest way. But there is one catch. To be able to use these magnetic blinds, your home must have metal doors or windows.

The principle of operation of magnetic blinds

The magnetic blinds come with several extra strong magnetic brackets. These brackets have magnetic capabilities on both sides. This way you can attach one side to the blinds and the other to a window or door. Some products come with a moving magnet that allows you to open or close the blinds. Some products come with fixed magnetic brackets.

With that in mind, here is a simple step by step guide to using magnetic blinds.

Things You'll Need

  • magnetic shutter
Step 1 - Assemble the Magnetic Brackets

First, take out the magnetic bracket and connect the two parts of the bracket. Most often, such brackets consist of two parts. You don't need tools for this. Use your hands. For this demo, I used Magna Blinds with three magnetic brackets.

Step 2 - Draw brackets to the blind

Then attach the magnetic brackets to the blinds. Refer to the user manual to determine where you should attach the magnets.

Step 3 - Attach the blinds to the window/door

Finally, attach the blinds to the window. The magnetic brackets will hold the blinds to the window with no problem.

Pros and cons of using magnetic blinds

pros
  • Quick and easy to assemble
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to remove and clean
Cons
  • Works only with metal doors and windows.
  • Some blinds may lose their magnetic power after a while.

Method 2 - Using Adjustable Tension Rods

Hanging your blinds on an adjustable tension rod can last a long time. Unlike other things, you don't need to replace it regularly. Here is a simple guide to hanging window blinds with a tension rod.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable tension rod
  • Measuring tape
Step 1 - Measure

First, measure the inner width of the window. Then adjust the tension rod according to that measurement. When adjusting, lower two or three inches from the tension rod (compared to the inside width of the window).

Step 2 - Place the rod

Then place a tension rod between the edges of the window and the rod should be parallel to the ground.

Step 3 - Tighten the rod correctly

Then spread the rod across the width of the window and pull the string to secure the rod. Remember that the connection between the rod and the window frame must be tight. Otherwise, the curtain will fall out.

Finally, open the blinds.

Pros and cons of adjustable tension rods

pros
  • You can use these rods for any window size.
  • Longer
Cons
  • Do not use a rod for a window frame with a small thickness. The thickness of the window frame must be at least equal to the diameter of the tension rod.

Method 3 - Using Command Strips/Hooks

Hooks and slats are the third method I recommend for hanging window blinds without drilling. This is a great product for hanging window blinds, curtains, wind chimes and more.

Let's answer a few common questions before we get started.

Can blinds be hung with command strips?

Yes it is possible. In truth, this is one of the most effective ways to hang blinds. These command strips have adhesive on both sides. Thus, it will be easy to attach it to the wall and then to the blinds.

Also, if you ever want to remove the blinds from the wall, you can remove them without damaging either the walls or the window blinds. This is a major plus compared to other adhesive strips on the market.

Quick-Tip: If the strip does not come out easily, apply some heat to it. Use a hair dryer for this. Heat will easily loosen the adhesion of the adhesive.

You can easily attach the Command hooks to the bands if needed. Most often Command hooks are used for hanging curtains and blinds.

How many pounds can one command strip hold?

The maximum weight the Command bar can support depends on its size. For example, smaller ones can hold up to 4 pounds. And the larger ones can hold about 16 pounds. So, depending on the weight of the blinds, you can choose any.

How to use command strips/hooks to hang blinds?

Things You'll Need
  • Command strips and hooks
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Clean cloth
  • Medical alcohol
Step 1 - Clean the Surface

First, don't forget to clean the surface you are attaching the command bars to. Take a clean cloth and remove any dust from this area. Then wipe the surface with alcohol.

Step 2 - Mark the places

Next, take a measuring tape and measure the distance to where you plan to place the strip. And mark this place. Then go to the other end of the window and measure the same distance, don't forget to mark that spot as well.

Step 3 - Attach Command Strips

Peel off the cover of the strip and attach it to the marked area. Do the same for the second point.

Step 4 - Remove the cover

Now remove the cover from the other side to expose the adhesive. You must complete this process for both command strips.

Step 5 - Hang Your Blinds

You can hang blinds directly on the plank. Or attach a command hook to the strips and hang the curtain on the hook.

Quick-Tip: When attaching strips and hooks, hold them for at least 5 seconds.

Method 4 - Using self-adhesive blinds

In the above method, you buy the adhesive tape separately.

But when you use self-adhesive blinds, you don't need anything else. These types of blinds have two or more adhesive layers. Usually these layers are located at the bottom and top of the blinds. The only thing you have to do is measure the window correctly.

Here is a simple guide on how to use self-adhesive blinds to hang your window blinds.

Things You'll Need

  • Self-adhesive curtain
  • Measuring tape
  • Clean cloth
  • Medical alcohol
Step 1 - Clean the window frame

The first step is to clean the window frame. The adhesive will stick to the top and bottom window frames. So, remove the dust from this area. Then wipe the surface with alcohol.

Quick-Tip: Never use household cleaners to clean the surface. They will make the surface slippery and weaken the adhesion of the adhesive.

Step 2 - Remove the protective strip

There should be a protective strip protecting the adhesive layer. So peel off the strip to expose the adhesive layer.

Step 3 - Attach the blinds

Then attach the self-adhesive curtain to the top window frame. If necessary, attach the bottom adhesive layer to the bottom window frame.

Quick-Tip: Remember to hold the adhesive layer with both hands while attaching the adhesive layer to the window frame.

Also choose quality self-adhesive blinds for long-term use. Some low-quality ones may not stick to the surface after a while.

A few things to pay attention to when installing window blinds

Correct measurement

Proper measurement is an important part of installing window blinds. You should always measure the inside size of your window. And the measurements must be accurate. Otherwise, you will end up with a much larger or smaller window shade during installation.

Clean the surface

Remember to properly clean the contact surface when using adhesive strips or self-adhesive blinds. First, use a clean cloth to remove dust. Then wipe the surface with alcohol. Otherwise, the glue will not stick to the surface.

Quality issues

Whether you buy a tension rod or adhesive tape, the quality of the product must meet certain standards. The use of low-quality products only leads to a reduction in the service life. So, be sure to do some research before buying any product.

Why should you undergo treatment without drilling?

People often wonder why they should be treated without drilling when hanging window blinds. If you are one of them, here are a few reasons.

Lack of tools

Sometimes finding a drill will be difficult. Or you may not have experience with a power drill. When this happens, you have no other options. So, stick to the above four methods.

Problems with the landlord

You may experience this problem, especially if you live in a rented apartment. Most landlords have strict rules about drilling holes in their apartments.

They just won't allow it.

And some may let you drill holes. But they will ask you to fix the damage before you move out. Or they may deduct the cost of damages from your security deposit. In any case, these are situations that should be avoided. So using Command strips or self-adhesive blinds is a good idea, and it can be cheaper.

Newly renovated house

Drilling holes in a newly renovated home is tricky business and most people won't like the idea. So, instead of drilling holes, you can use the methods above to hang your window blinds safely and securely. After all, the above methods are great for home craftsmen.

Should I get a professional for this job?

Even though the step-by-step instructions above seem simple, some people may have trouble following them. If so, feel free to hire a qualified technician to install your window blinds. It may cost you more, but the results will be the best you can get.

A technician can install any type of window blinds such as Roman blinds, vertical blinds, Venetian blinds and custom blinds. (1)
