How to find out which license plates are available in your state

When you register your vehicle, you receive a license plate. Unless you specify otherwise, you will receive a standard generic license plate for your state. However, in most states there are many options for entertainment, specialized license plates. Some of these plates are simply different colors or different themes, while others are personalized for certain professions or colleges. In addition to these special license plates, you can personalize the letters and numbers that appear on your license plate.

Having a custom license plate is a lot of fun because it helps your car stand out and makes it personalized and authentic to yours. However, before you get a specialized plate, you will need to find the ones available in your state and select the plate for you. You will also have to pay a small fee to get a custom plate.

Method 1 of 2: Use the DMV website.

Step 1: Log in to your local DMV website.. All special license plates must be purchased from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the same place where you register your vehicle. To access your state's DMV website, go to www.DMV.org and select the state in which your vehicle is (or will be) registered.

To select your state, simply click the blue arrow at the top of the web page next to the words "Select Your State".

Step 2: Go to the DMV Special License Plates page.. Go to the special license plate section of the DMV website. Once you're on your state's DMV page, click the button that says "Registration and Licensing," then select "License Plates and Plates." Then follow the instructions on the site to find the section for special license plates.

  • Functions: Depending on your state, you may need to enter the zip code where your vehicle is registered to see the special license plates available.

Step 3: Choose your favorite license plate. Browse special license plate deals and choose the one that best suits you and your vehicle.

Step 4: Check the license plate requirements of your choice. Some license plates are only available to select people, so you should double check if you are eligible for the special license plate you have chosen. You should also check what the charge will be for that particular plate.

Step 5: If possible, order your custom plate. In many states, you can order a special license plate directly from the DMV website. However, some sites only sell plates at the DMV branch. Read the instructions on the custom plates page to see if you can checkout or not.

Method 2 of 2: Obtain license plates from a DMV branch.

Step 1: Find your nearest DMV office. You can find your local DMV office on your state DMV website or use Google DMV search. Find the address and make sure they are open when you plan to go.

  • FunctionsA: Many DMV offices are open only on weekdays, during standard business hours, so you may need to change your schedule to travel to DMV.

Step 2: Check available special license plates. Most DMV offices display most or all of the special license plates, but if not, a DMV employee will be able to provide you with a list of available license plates.

Step 3: Read the requirements and purchase a special license plate. The DMV officer can tell you which special license plates are available to you and what the fees will be to purchase them. Follow your DMV representative's instructions to purchase a special license plate.

With your new custom license plate, your car will be a little more fun, a little more unique, and a lot more personalized.
