How do I know if the OBD system is working properly?

Today's cars are much more complex than they once were and require a computer to monitor and control the various systems in order for everything to work together properly. It also gives you the opportunity to determine if there is something wrong with your vehicle. OBD II system (on-board diagnostics) is a system that allows the mechanic to communicate with your car's computer and receive trouble codes in many situations. These codes tell the mechanic what the problem is, but not necessarily what the real problem is.

How to know if OBD is working

Determining if your OBD system is working is actually very simple.

Start with the engine off. Turn the key to the on position and then start the engine until it starts. Watch out for the dash at this time. The Check Engine light should come on and stay on for a short period of time. Then it should turn off. A short flash is a signal that the system is running and ready to control your vehicle during operation.

If the Check Engine light comes on and stays on, there is a Trouble Code (DTC) stored in the computer that indicates a problem somewhere in the engine, transmission, or emissions system. This code must be checked by a mechanic so that an accurate repair can be made.

If the Check Engine light does not flash or turn off (or never comes on at all), this is a sign that something is wrong with the system and should be checked by a professional mechanic.

Your car will not pass the annual tests without a working OBD system, and you will also have no way of knowing that something is wrong with the car.
