How to choose a used e-bike?

Have you decided to give the electric bike a shot? If you're not sure what you like or are on a tight budget, a used bike can be a good compromise. This will allow you to test the Assisted Driving System and see which model is right for you. To avoid scams and make your choice easier, here are all our tips.

Which type of used e-bike should you choose?

To find out, first ask yourself how you plan on using your future electric bike. Are you going to commute between home and work? Walking around the village? Do you use it for sports, in the mountains or in the forest?

  • Are you a city dweller? Go for a city e-bike or even a foldable model that lets you get on the train with ease.
  • Are you planning to hit the road? Then the electric VTC is for you, as is the speed bike if you're a speed lover.
  • Rando fan? There is a used electric mountain bike, but check its condition!

Used e-bikes: what to ask the seller?

When buying a used e-bike, there are many things you need to consider carefully, starting with the overall appearance of the bike. If you don't mind a few scratches, keep in mind that the owner who cares about their bike has probably paid attention to its care. You can also ask him provide you with maintenance invoices and diagnostic reports. The latter will allow you, in particular, to know the number of charges and, therefore, to get an idea of the remaining battery life.

Check for wear chain, cassette, check brakes and steering to make sure everything is working properly.

And above all: try cycling! As with a new bike, testing is important to ensure you enjoy the ride. But even more so for a used car, this is the only way to ensure the performance of the electric booster. Take a close look at the box: if it has been hit, or if you get the impression that it has been opened, help may be compromised.

Make sure the seller can provide you with invoice and, if applicable, warranty documents... Obviously, he should sell you a bike with a battery, charger and all the elements needed to make it work.

Where to buy a used e-bike?

  • In the shop: some bike shops have used parts. Benefit: You benefit from the seller's advice, and the bikes are usually serviced before they go on sale.
  • In the Internet : the Troc Vélo website lists all advertisements from individuals selling their used bicycles. Vélo Privé specializes in stock closing and private sales, so great deals are possible! Otherwise, regular sites like Le Bon Coin and Rakutan are full of these types of ads.
  • In the bicycle market: Bike exchanges, often organized on weekends by bike clubs or associations, are a bargain hunter's paradise. For Parisians, you can also find a used bike at a flea market!

How much does a used e-bike cost?

Again, be careful. When a bike catches your eye and you have already completed all the usual checks listed above, find out about its starting price... If the price of used goods is too high, negotiate or go your own way! If it seems too low, it is suspicious: it could be stolen or hide a serious flaw.

The discount on e-bikes is usually around 30% in the first year and 20% in the second.
