Speeding is one of the most flagrant traffic violations. It is punished seriously under Article 12.9 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, parts 1-5. If you exceed by 21-40 km / h, you will have to pay a fine of 500-2500 rubles. If they exceeded by 61 and above, then they can deprive them of their rights.
To avoid fines and deprivation, you can go in several ways:
- adhere to speed limits on this section of the road, that is, drive according to the rules;
- avoid areas where there may be patrols or where photographic cameras are installed;

What means of measuring speed are used in the Russian Federation?
All types of speedometers emit in a certain range:
- X-band (Barrier, Sokol-M) has been banned in the Russian Federation since 2012, because the waves propagate over a long distance, creating interference, and radar detectors detect them several kilometers away;
- K-band (Spark, KRIS, Vizir) by far the most common, the beam hits a long distance, while the signal energy is too low, so cheap radar detectors may not distinguish this signal from background noise;
- Ka-band it is much more difficult to detect, but fortunately in the Russian Federation this frequency grid is occupied by the military, therefore it is not used in the traffic police, but in the USA it is used almost everywhere;
- Ku-band is exotic for Russia and is not yet applied;
- L range (TruCam, LISD, Amata) - the camera sends short pulses of infrared light, they are reflected from the headlights or windshield and returned to the camera receiver.
There are also Ultra-ranges (POP mode, Instant-On), of which Ultra-K is relevant for Russia, on which Strelka-ST operates. Its essence is that the beam is released in short pulses of a few nanoseconds duration and cheap radar detectors cannot distinguish them from radio noise, or catch them, but at a distance of 150-50 meters from Strelka, when your speed has long been fixed.
It also matters how the speedometer works. So, tripods or complexes installed permanently emit in a constant mode and even inexpensive devices can detect their signal. But impulse measurements, when a traffic cop uses his radar from time to time, can often be detected only by the reflection of the signal from other surfaces.
It is difficult to detect the laser range, since it belongs to the short-pulse range and radar detectors pick it up only by wave reflection.
Features of radar detectors
A device adapted for use on the territory of the Russian Federation must have the following characteristics:
- picks up K-band signals;
- there are Instant-On and POP modes for capturing short-pulse signals;
- lens with wide coverage (180-360 degrees) and wavelength reception from 800-1000 m.
If you go to the store and the seller starts telling you that, they say, this model catches on the Ka, Ku, X, K bands, plus all the same modes with the Ultra prefix, tell him that only K and Ultra-K as well as L-band. Instant-On is also important, while POP is the American standard.
Naturally, additional functions are of great importance:
- city / highway mode - there is a lot of interference in the city, so the sensitivity of the heterodyne receiver can be reduced;
- detection protection VG-2 - not relevant for Russia, but in the EU the use of radar detectors is prohibited, and this function can protect your device from detection;
- adjustments - screen brightness, signal volume, language selection;
- GPS-module - makes it possible to enter the locations of cameras and places of false positives into the database.
In principle, this whole set of settings will be enough.
