How to straighten a wire

We all know how difficult it can be to straighten wires. If you need to straighten a wire, there are several tools to help you. In this guide, I will teach you how to make a straight wire.

As an electrician, I regularly have to straighten bent wires for various jobs. In doing so, I use several useful tricks.

Follow these simple steps to fix kinks and kinks in the wire:

Insulated wire

  • Wrap the end of the wire around the screwdriver shaft.
  • Take a screwdriver and wind the wire around with your hand
  • Straighten the end of the coil with your dominant hand.
  • Keep pulling until the entire length is wrapped around the screwdriver.

Wire gauge 22 to 26

  • Secure one end of the wire with pliers.
  • Grab the wire right in front of the nylon jaw pliers.
  • Straighten the nylon pliers along the entire length of the wire.
  • Repeat process with pliers
  • Inspect the wire for nicks that could weaken it.

I'll tell you more below.

Straightening insulated wire

Step 1: Wrap the end of the wire around the shaft of the screwdriver.

You can use any screwdriver with a round shank. Place the end of the wire at the base of the handle. Wrap it tightly around the shaft. Make sure you have enough wire on the end to get a good grip later on.

Step 2: Grab a screwdriver and wind the wire around with your hand

Grasp the screwdriver with your non-dominant hand and wind the wire. Hold the screwdriver parallel to the floor in front of you. Hold the base of the handle firmly. Press the twisted wire against the shaft with your thumb.

Step 3: Pull the end of the coil straight with your dominant hand

Secure the short end of the twisted wire and begin to pull it perpendicular to the screwdriver. Keep the wire at the same level as the screwdriver so you don't accidentally twist it again. The bends in the wire will flatten out as they pass around the screwdriver, helping to straighten the wire.

Step 4: Keep pulling until the entire length is wrapped around the screwdriver.

Adjust your firm grip so that your dominant hand is next to the screwdriver. If you do not need the entire length of the wire, straighten it as much as possible before cutting the end with wire cutters.

Alternatively, you can use a drill as shown below:

Step 1 Pass the wire through your finger to remove any kinks.

If your wire has a lot of kinks and kinks along its length, bend it by hand to straighten it out. Hold the end of the wire firmly with your fingers. Pull the wire along its entire length, pinching it with the index and thumb of the other hand.

Step 2. Secure one end of the wire with needle nose pliers.

It doesn't matter which end of the needle nose pliers you use. To prevent the wire from slipping, pinch it between the jaws of the pliers. Hold the needle nose pliers firmly with your non-dominant hand.

Step 3: Grab the wire right in front of the nylon jaw pliers.

The flat plastic jaws of the nylon pliers do not leave marks on the wire. With your dominant hand, open the pliers and lightly pinch them around the wire. To work effectively, start as close to the needle nose pliers as possible.

Step 4. Straighten the nylon pliers along the entire length of the wire.

Hold the needle-nosed pliers firmly so that the wire does not slip out. Apply light pressure as you slide the nylon pliers over the wire. Straighten the pliers until you reach the end of the wire. Some bends and kinks need to be ironed out.

Step 5: Repeat the process with pliers until the wire is straight.

It is unlikely that your wire will be perfectly straight on the first pass. Keep moving it along the wire until you reach the end. Always start right in front of the needle nose pliers and work your way down the wire until you are satisfied with how it looks.

Step 6 Inspect the wire for nicks or grooves that could weaken it.

Measure the length of the wire to see if it's thinner in some places than in others. Small marks or scratches are only cosmetic, so there is nothing to worry about.

For 26+ gauge wires, you will need a drill to straighten them.
