How to replace the AC evaporator sensor

The air conditioner evaporator pressure sensor changes its internal resistance depending on the temperature of the evaporator. This information is used by the electronic control unit (ECU) to control the compressor.

By engaging and disengaging the compressor clutch depending on the evaporator temperature, the ECU prevents the evaporator from freezing. This ensures the correct operation of the air conditioning system and prevents damage to it.

Part 1 of 3: Locate the evaporator sensor

To safely and effectively replace the evaporator sensor, you will need a few basic tools:

  • Free Repair Manuals - Autozone provides free online repair manuals for certain makes and models.
  • Protective gloves
  • Chilton repair manuals (optional)
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Locate the evaporator sensor. The evaporator sensor will be mounted either on the evaporator or on the evaporator body.

The exact location of the evaporator depends on the car, but it is usually located inside or under the dashboard. Consult your vehicle repair manual for exact location.

Part 2 of 3: Remove the evaporator sensor

Step 1: Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a ratchet. Then put it aside.

Step 2: Remove the sensor electrical connector.

Step 3: Remove the sensor. Push down on the sensor to release the removal tab. You may also need to turn the sensor counterclockwise.

  • AttentionNote: Some evaporator temperature sensors require removal of the evaporator core for replacement.

Part 3 of 3 - Install the evaporator temperature sensor

Step 1: Install a new evaporator temperature sensor. Insert the new evaporator temperature sensor by pushing it in and turning it clockwise if necessary.

Step 2: Replace the electrical connector.

Step 3: Reinstall the negative battery cable. Reinstall the negative battery cable and tighten it.

Step 4: Check the air conditioner. When everything is ready, turn on the air conditioner to see if it works.

Otherwise, you should contact a qualified technician to diagnose your air conditioning system.
